Reactions To The Prez Speech [Temp 1]

So what did you all thing about our Prez speech last night?


Im still amazed hes trying to tie Iraq to Al Quieda (did i spell that right?) and WMD. Im glad hes going to other nations and asking for help, yet I have no idea where he plans to get 87 BILLION dollars for his "war".

Anything I say folks will bash becouse they know Im a Dem and I dont like this Prez so I want everyone to share their thoughts.

I'm somewhere in the middle on this one. I don't think we should have gone in to begin with, and at the time I suggested that the aftermath was going to be far more difficult than winning the war. Now, I think two things need to happen. First, Bush needs to level with the American people about the human and monetary cost that we will have to bear for some time yet (this is beginning to happen) and get rid of Rumsfeld. Second, he has to go to the UN with a little less of a bullying attitude, and the UN nations need to step up and take on a legitimate role in helping to police, rebuild, and finance Iraq.

I think our efforts in the end will be futile, can&#39;t outlast an arab - what if we just leave them alone with their crude and hell yeah have blackouts in the US and gas lines. Let walmart collapse.
Won&#39;t it happen eventually?, Cannot people adjust to change? Dick Cheney still seems to think that energy conservation practices are an optional personal virtue, thus making it a choice of consumer&#39;s and the corporate organizations that feed the supply (or is it demand)

As far as taking care of the people in Iraq,Afghanistan, etc etc The whole humanitarian effort should come from other nations in the Mid-East; they need to learn to play nice in the sandbox :angry: :lol:

At any rate, my nice comfy american life is so far removed from that strife that what can one do about it?

I took the speech as an indication that:

1) the President knows his popularity with the American electorate is dropping, and

2) things in Iraq are bad, and rapidly heading toward worse.

Just my own uninformed opinion.....

It was typical Bush...lies, mis-representations, and bullying. Explain to me why the UN has any responsibilty for rebuilding Iraq? The US ignored the UN and said we will go at it alone with our "coalition of the willing." Now that we are having trouble, he is again bullying the UN to make them help. As for all this money he is requesting...I thought Iraqi oil would finance the reconstruction? And since when was Iraq the central theater in the war on terror? I thought that was Afganistan. Also, the people shooting US troops are not terrorists. They are Iraqis fighting an invading force. The attacks on the UN headquarters, public spaces, and the mosques are terrorist attacks, but when people attack soldiers that have invaded their country, it is not terrorism. Bush just uses the label to justify his administrations actions.

I am not saying that I support the killing of troops, I am saying that killing soldiers is not terrorism, it is part of war. I hope that every person that guns down a US soldier is hunted down and killed and I hope that this shooting stops, but to call people fighting against a country that invaded their country in a time of war "terrorists" is misleading. The president throws the term "terrorism" around far to loosley. In this President&#39;s mind, anyone who opposes the US is a terrorist.

No doubt, Bush uses the word &#39;terrorism&#39; to discredit anything he does not like. Does that mean the people attacking coalition forces in Iraq are not terrorists?

The most important document in American history is the Declaration of Independence. It spells out a concept that the only legitimate government is one that rules with the consent of the governed, and that a people are within their rights to overthrow that government if it does not have that consent. Hussein and the Baathists did not rule by consent. Unfortunately, it was not the Iraqi people, but US and other forces that overthrew the government, and not by invitation of the Iraqi masses. This cloudies the picture. Is the US occupation legitimate, under our own political philosophy? Are the people attacking our forces justified in doing so? It gets cloudier. These are not &#39;freedom fighters,&#39; but people bent on returning to dictatorship. Maybe they are not terrorists under the strictest definition, but they are not good guys, either.

The sooner political power in Iraq is turned over to the Iraqi people, to form a legitimate government, the sooner the situation for everyone over there will improve. Some members of the UN might have found excuses not to participate in the major military campaign. They cannot, with any conscience, fail to support the reconstruction of Iraq and its establishment of consentual governance. For our part, we need to act as if Iraq is not our prize, and begin to share the role of rebuilding that nation.

Which may be part of our reluctance to really giving the UN or the Iraqis any real administrative role. How eager do you think a UN administrator and/or a popular Iraqi government would be to give re-building contracts exclusively to US or even British companies? My guess is not very. But, what do I know?

Absolutely 100% correct. We led a "coalition of the willing". What changed? Nothing.

One thing DID stay the same: FOR THE SECOND TIME a President named Bush called an end to major hostilities in Iraq TOO EARLY. We should have kept pressing these militant factions while the heat was on and we had the offensive upper hand. Our GI&#39;s are now caught in minor scrimigages aimed at attrition - both in body count and morale. Poor judgement IMHO.

I cant&#39; belief Bush had the stone cajones to send Powell to the UN seeking aid. Kinda makes me wonder if the bombing of the UN Mission in Bagdad really was a CIA operation.

BTW, I didn&#39;t watch the speech because I was afraid I&#39;d hurl the remote at the TV. Just the sound of Bush makes me sick, like that guy who became phyically ill from listening to Mary Hart on ET.
