Guess the City #276 (Aerial photo edition #1)

This one should not be all that difficult. It is from a screenshot of a Terraserver-usa image, so it is from somewhere under the purview of their database.

Hint/Warning -- I may or may not have rotated the image, so 'up' may or may not be 'north'.

    Enjoy!

    is it

    My guess is Buffalo?

Sure is strange to see a region mall right on the water like that I heard something about one being planned for Buffalo that would include a Bass pro shop a few years back.

I'm from Buffalo and thats definetly not Buffalo. The Bass Pro shop planned for Buffalo is actually slated to go into Memorial Auditorium, former home of the Buffalo Sabres.

Buffalo, NY is not a bad guess, and it is kindof in the right line of thought, but no cigar.

Nope, not Baltimore nor Norfolk, either.

So it's on the great lakes?

It's clearly not Chicago, nor any other place on the south end of Lake Michigan, if for no other reason because there aren't any breakwaters protecting that port facility from sand.

Even though jordanb told us not to go for the south side, I'm going to guess Gary, IN anyway.

Right "above" the mall is what looks like the entrance to a ship lock. So I'm thinking this is on the Great Lakes or St. Lawrence Seaway. How's that for narrowing things down?

Jordan is correct in that it is not the Chicagoland/Gary area.

I will add a hint here, probably more than I really have to - it is on fresh water.

    Duluth, MN?

I know they have a lot of locks and channels and have a pretty vibrant lake front commercial area.

I'm sorry. Is my bias showing?

Ohh Ohhh Mr Kotter!!! Is it the Soo? Sault Ste Marie, Ontario?

I'm willing to bet that if it is a great lakes project that it is Canadian!

    Is not Waukegan in Chicagoland?

I'm guessing that it's in the United States because I don't think that Terraserver-USA has Canadian imagery. At any rate it can't be on the St. Laurence because it's not wide enough except at Quebec and I don't recall anything like that at Quebec.

I looked at Sault St. Marie and Duluth in Google Earth, didn't see any port facility like that.

I doubt it's on a river because the port doesn't appear to be protected against water running parallel to the shore.

I don't think it's in Cleveland or Detroit because we have people from there on here. And we know it's not in Buffalo. I don't think it's in Milwaukee because I don't recognize anything from there.

    Sooo.

    Toledo? Rochester?

EDIT: Just looked at that link, Detroit Planner. Google Earth failed me because it has a fuzzy line running right through the area in question, so I didn't recognize it. You win.

    DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!

Yes, it is indeed Sault Sainte Marie, ON!

The image was rotated 134 degrees clockwise, 'north' is downward to the right. That is the Station Mall on the riverfront and the downstream entrance to the northernmost of the SOO Locks at the upper right. The city's Queen St business district is one block inland from the mall and the Algoma Central passenger station is a couple of blocks to the right of the mall.

    The image was shot from:
