    Breaking News From Bear

OK, fellow Cyburbians, now is your chance to see this Bear's real name. One (1) of my submissions to The Unicorn Hunters (from Lake Superior State University) was accepted and is now on the AP wire. This annual list of "banished words" makes national news on the 1st day of the year, every year.

    I rule !!!

oddly enough, there are two (2) winning submissions from Swanton, OH. I do not know the other Swanton person listed. There is also a winning submission from Bowling Green, OH.....another NW Ohio community.

We are literary wizards, don't ya know. We don't "dawg" around. We "git'r-done".

Enjoy. (Nice way to start the New Year for this Bear.)

(Do a Google for above info "Unicorn Hunters" or go to Random Thread, because JNA posted it.

I checked out the complete list.

I am shocked that "a race to the bottom" is not on it.

Some people know that this really pushes my buttons (is that on there?), and take advantage of it on a regular basis.

    Waiting For The 2007 List

    Jump-starting an old thread.....

This Bear is waiting to see the January 1, 2007, list of "Banished Words". These gems make the national news every New Year's Day. The list on January 1, 2006, included a submission from your's truly.

I have submitted a couple more. If they do not get accepted, I will let you know what word or phrase was rejected by the good folks at Lake Superior State University's Unicorn Hunters. I remember one of the phrases but dang if I can remember the other. The mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Just found out from a co-worker that if you go to Wikipedia and search "Swanton, OH" you get a brief description of our cozy little NW Ohio village and a mention of "People Of Merit" from Swanton.

    Wanna guess who is mentioned?

I have absolutely no idea who placed it on the site. I am a vain sort of guy but I wouldn't do that. (Cue Meat Loaf's tune.....)

It is mid-year and I have already submitted a word (or phrase) to the Unicorn Hunters. The 2008 list will be issued on January 1, 2008. Can I make it three years in a row????

    We shall see.

Bear Does A "Surge" To The List !!!

    Woo Hoo !!!

This Bear is once again a contributor to the national news.....a word submitted by me has made the Annual List Of Banished Words. The list was made public this morning (New Year's Eve, 2007) and will be on all networks on New Year's Day, 2008. Woo Hoo !!!

Three years in a row, baby! I'm not sure that anybody in the many years this list has been announced have had submissions for three years in a row.

    Cyburbians.....you walk with the famous.

My word this year was SURGE.

For what it's worth, my others submissions this year were PARIS HILTON and TRAIN WRECK. I thought TRAIN WRECK had a better chance, 'cause it is very overused by the media.

    Give me a cyber-high five!

What fun - these are great! Congrats to you, Bear!

I had to go all the way back to 2004 to find one of my favorites, which is (unfortunately) still out there: "embed" used in the context of news reporting. Bleh.

I like the way they used all of the list in the introduction (which is back one level).

Did TRACTION and HAVING SAID THAT make previous lists? They should.

    Congrats Bear!

I would add TREACHEROUS (as used in "treacherous driving conditions"). Since when can a combination of road and weather equal deceit, subversion and treason?

I think it comes from the "deceit" part. They are personifying the conditions as appearing better than they really are, luring drivers into trouble. Perhaps it is just sour grapes, people seeing a driving conditions conspiracy as the culprit, rather than that they overestimated their abilities.

    Nice job, BUN

I just read the story on the AP wires as posted on the Washington Post web site.

    Love the quote:
Give me the old days, when it referenced collapsing hydroelectric dams and exploding PCB-laden electrical transformers.

    Bear is too modest.

A couple of months ago I went down to the small towns around Tolledo to do some garbage picking. I found his original list:

    the
    it
    to
    yes
    no
    bathroom?
    distribution

Seriously, congrats on year three. Do they give you a free pass to the Tower of History?

Interesting question, Mr. DetroitPlanner......and, as always, I have a nostalgic story to share that is somewhat related.....

For those who don't know, The Tower Of History is an observation tower built in Sault Ste. Marie, MI, in the eastern Upper Peninsula. From the observation decks you get a nice view of the Soo Locks, both Sault Ste. Marie communities (USA and Canada), the huge steel mill in Soo Canada, Lake Superior's Whitefish Bay, the rolling hills and escarpments of the Lake Superior shore (especially north toward Wawa, Ontario).

Because of the long and cold winters, with abundant snowfall, the area between The Soo and tiny Paradise, MI, is a snowmobiler's "wonderland", with many groomed trails. Very popular area for the snow machines.

It is common for folks from The Soo to follow those snow-packed trails to Paradise.....about 60 miles as the snow machine "skidoos" through the forest.....and party at the great taverns in the resort village. Those taverns include The Red Flannel Inn and The Yukon Inn. Taverns along the way (back in the day) included King Tut's (now called Bear Butt Tavern), Silver Creek Bar, and Big Abe's.

This Bear is not a snow machine person, but when on vacations in Paradise in winter weather I certainly had my share of drinks with those that do snowmobile.

One year, my ex-wife decided to "exchange spit" (make-out) in The Yukon with one of the folks from The Soo. That's all they did.....luckily.....but when he left he gave the ex a couple free passes to another Soo attraction.....the Soo Locks sight-seeeing boats. Later that year, when the warm summer sun changed the Upper Peninsula landscape, we used those free ducats and enjoyed the Soo Locks trip.

BTW......that dude from The Soo.....he was the mayor.

I think you got the better of the tickets. I once headed to Paradise on a very snowy day. About half-way down the highway, between the bridge and paradise the radio was saying how the road commissions and school districts were telling people to stay home! I instantly thought well if the yoopers won't drive in this, why the heck am I doing it? So I headed to I-75. I saw I-75 was clear and decided to continue my journey North, but only on a different trajectory.

I did the tower, it is nowhere near as tall as it seems as it is surrounded by much smaller buildings. The history part was just dioramas of Marquette and Chipps trading beads. There may have been four diaramas tops.

I did do the Valley Camp on that trip. It was much more interesting and educational.

    Going For A Four-Peat !!!

This Bear has just submitted my first Year 2008 entry in the Banished Words List derby. As you probably know, because I have rattled your ears with these tales for the previous three years, Lake Superior State University (in the beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan) announces the Banished Words List on January 1 of every year. Their list always makes the national and international news.

Words that I have submitted have made the list for three years in a row. Now, in addition to my picture at the post office, my name is known world-wide.

So........I am going for a four-peat. Can I do it? Don't know, but it is fun trying.
