    [NationStates] NationStates General Thread

So I stumbled to this site, that's actually somewhat of an online game... Basically what you do is create a nation. When you do you can choose what type of government you want and you have to answer some short questions to get it started. For your nation to develop, you need to address some issues that arise, and depending on your response (or non response) your nation will evolve acordingly. Nations are inserted in regions, which can be created, so who's up for a Cyburbian Region?

    The link is: http://www.nationstates.net/

And if you want to take a trip to the wonderful Republic of Skeletonics (Skeletonia was reserved), go here
It's currently a Left Wing Utopia, but I presume that'll change when I start privatizing things...

EDIT: JNL is right... it is based on that novel... I forgot to mention that...

    Interesting website: http://www.maxbarry.com/jennifergovernment/

To help promote his novels, Max wrote the online political game NationStates, which has been played by over half a million people and is currently causing him to drown in e-mail from people who want new features. His third novel, Company, will be published in 2006.

    Max Q & A
Is Jennifer Government an anti-corporate novel ?
Kind of. But I mostly like corporations. There's something inherently funny about them, both in how they work when you're inside one, and how they operate in society. I don't believe corporations are particularly good or evil, though; I think it's a mistake to buy into the idea of corporations as real people. A publicly-listed corporation exists for the sole purpose of making money. It's not legally permitted to do anything else: that would be a breach of its fiduciary duty to the shareholders. Corporations are wealth-creation machines, and their employees are cogs in that machine, to be jettisoned unless they're producing. This is not the result of cruel CEOs or greedy executives: it's just what you get from an entity that has just a single, economic goal. Nobody should be surprised when we discover another corporation putting profits ahead of people's well-being, because that's all they're allowed to do.

Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here?
Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

I can't wait to see the nations that some notable Cyburbians can make, like jaws, BKM, Rumpy, michaelskis, el Guapo to name a few....

I'm gonna wait until a few others join to create the Cyburbian Region...

The Republic of Iricion is a tiny, safe nation, remarkable for its absence of drug laws. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 5 million are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.

The government -- a sprawling, bureaucracy-choked, socially-minded morass -- is mainly concerned with Social Welfare, although Religion & Spirituality and Healthcare are on the agenda. The average income tax rate is 44%, but much higher for the wealthy. A tiny private sector is dominated by the Furniture Restoration industry.

Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown. Iricion's national animal is the town drunk, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is The Guiness.

Yep. I'll have to check that out at home. The idea sounds very very interesting.
People will miss that it once meant something to be Southern or Midwestern. It doesn't mean much now, except for the climate. The question, “Where are you from?” doesn't lead to anything odd or interesting. They live somewhere near a Gap store, and what else do you need to know? - Garrison Keillor

    Pretty cool.

A little bit about The Republic of GUDP. The Republic of GUDG is a tiny, pleasant nation, remarkable for its burgeoning griffin population. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 5 million enjoy a sensible mix of personal and economic freedoms, while the political process is open and the people's right to vote held sacrosanct.

The large government juggles the competing demands of Social Welfare, Healthcare, and Education. The average income tax rate is 25%. A robust private sector is led by the Book Publishing, Information Technology, and Furniture Restoration industries.

Crime is relatively low. GUDG's national animal is the griffin and its currency is the dollar.
I'd be more apathetic if I weren't so lethargic.

Tell the truth. The "republic" is really Burma. Which is why it changes its name so quickly.

I looked at this several years ago too. 'never really got into it.

Ok, so how many have their Nations ready?
It'll be great to have the links to their nations... so I can add them to my dossier. Right now I've only added Iricion, GUDG and Zmanica
I'm currently in the east pacific and now a member of the UN.
So shall we all move in to our Cyburbian Region? What shall we call it? (plain out Cyburbia doesn't sound very good)

Well in a week your nation is not going to evolve much... Ok, it's a slow game, but still... you could give it a second shot don't you think?
Anyways... I wasn't claiming that this game was new or something.. I said that I just had discovered it and it looked interesting, slow but interesting (you only get to deal about an issue a day or so...)

So please, those who haven't tried it out, there's nothing to lose here for trying. And of course, have in mind what I just said... it's slow... but interesting...

    EDIT:

The move is quite simple, go to your region page (Below your state in the menu bar) and click on the link to change regions (it says: Tired of life in [your region]?, Then move to a new region!) And pick Cyburb.

    I'll be waiting for you!
So now we have our own region... I sent a telegram to all of the nations that I have. If anybody else here has a nation and wants to join the region, post a mesage here with the name of your state so I don't expell you.

I am surprised nobody used these classics --

    "The Duchy of Grand Fenwick"
    or
    "Freedonia"

Besides The Bear who knows these places ?

I'm a big Leonard Wibberly fan.....
By sheer coincidence I named my country The Grand Duchy of Maisteria in honor of that tiny fictional place!

Ok, from now on as a security measure I have added a password restricting the entry of Nations to our Region. I don't think we want to risk being invaded...

So all of those whose nations are not in yet post your nation name here and I'll send you the password through a telegram.

Maister and The Irish One have been notified already.

Ok, I've sent the password to everybody until now.(Check the Telegrams!) Remember to change to the Cyburb Region... There's no fun being all apart in huge regions....
Counting all, we're up to 9 people... I bet that there are more that can join! Don't be afraid it's just a game!
