Guess the City #284 (no picture)

Haven't done a GTC but no picture provided, in a while. So, here goes...

A river bisects my city in a diagonal fashion
A freeway cuts right through the heart of my city
    I have two malls/retail areas
I actually have a couple suburbs, one of which has about 30K ppl
The number 5 is significant in my city
It always smells like something is burning here
I compete for attention in my region with at least 4 other cities

    Good luck!

Is it Green Bay, WI? Number 5 being the almighty Brett Favre?

Can't be, because Brett Favre wears number 4.

You guys might want to think a little smaller. Not as small as Presidio, TX (the last GTC), but smaller than the near-1-million metropolises like Jacksonville and Sacramento.

    OK...here come some more clues:

There is an arena downtown, named for a cell phone company
On the city's southern outskirts is a regional aiport and a horse-racing track
One of the nearby cities competing for attention is a major college town and another has a lot of tourist attractions
A currently highly popular male TV and movie star was born here

No horsetrack there or competition with regional cities.

It is Cedar Rapids, Iowa, without a doubt.

It does howerver have the river, highway, and an arean the Verizon Wireless Arena. It is near several other minor cities. A couple of suburbs none big but one could be 30K. Cambridge MA is near and could be the college town they speak of. Airport to the south. This is my guess. Though I do not know about the #5 and burning smell.

Ding, ding, ding...Jmello is the winner

A river bisects my city in a diagonal fashion - The Cedar River, which is very beneficial to the city's downtown and park system, and forms the dividing line for a number of things, including address blocks

A freeway cuts right through the heart of my city - I-380 goes right through the heart

I have two malls/retail areas - Westdale Mall to the southwest, Lindale Mall to the northeast

I actually have a couple suburbs, one of which has about 30K ppl - Marion, IA has about 30K ppl

The number 5 is significant in my city - The city is known as "the city of Five Seasons"

It always smells like something is burning here - Many people (residents and visitors) complain about the smell in the air, sometimes attributed to the Quaker Oats plant located here

I compete for attention in my region with at least 4 other cities - those cities being Iowa City, Waterloo, Dubuque, and the Quad Cities...all competing with Cedar Rapids for the chief city of Eastern Iowa

There is an arena downtown, named for a cell phone company - U.S. Cellular Arena, formerly known as Five Seasons Arena, is located here

On the city's southern outskirts is a regional aiport and a horse-racing track - Eastern Iowa Airport and Hawkeye Downs & Fairgrounds

One of the nearby cities competing for attention is a major college town and another has a lot of tourist attractions - Iowa City (Univ. of Iowa) is located just to the south, and Dubuqe (Field of Dreams Movie Site, the Nat'l Farm Toy Museum, the Shot Tower, Ski Slopes, Mississippi River) is located to the northeast

A currently highly popular male TV and movie star was born here - host of his own show on MTV, a star on That 70s Show, and a rising movie actor...Ashton Kutcher was born here
