We recently had a guy apply for a home occupation permit. Nine out of ten times these requests are for folks who want to run a financial advising office or an internet sales business out of their home, but the individual in question wanted to run a 'fruit art' business. A what, you say? He said he carves and designs fruit exhibits for catered affairs, wine clubs, or gourmet restaurants. He used to work on a cruise ship and all he did all day was carve fruits and vegetables into designs sun up to sun down. I've never been on a cruise ship but I looked at some pictures and some of this fruit art is awesome!
Holy specialization Batman!
This is just one example, though, of a highly specialized job. When one stops to think that every detail in every area of every conceivable industry or service has to be taken care of by someone, the number of special tasks is mind boggling. For instance, I wonder whose job it was to remove the moon dirt/dust off returning astronauts boots...someone had to do it. Did NASA put an ad in the help wanted section? Wanted: moon scum removal technician 4. Must have Phd in astrophysics, geology and 2 yrs experience in the dry cleaning/spot removal industry. Please send resume and references to...
Watching movie credits is another rich source of unusual and highly specialized tasks (e.g. assistant pre-vis production designer)
What are some examples of other highly specialized/obscure jobs that you've heard of?
