When I've had a could-be-romance revert to mere friendship, I'm usually incredibly grateful. From the rear view mirror, it becomes clear that we don't have that much in common, and sometimes don't like each other well enough to be friends. Another way to look at it: you can only have one GF, but you can have a gazillion friends. And your female friends have friends who can be referred to you. Networking.
