Preparing for Planner I examination - help!

    Hi,

I'm preparing for an examination for a Planner I position with the local county govt. I'm reviewing text books, reading papers, etc., but does anyone have any advice in terms of what exactly to expect on this written exam? The tiny bits of information I was able to piece together from descriptions of other county planning exams is that it will most likely be at least half multiple choice, some situational questions... does anyone have any, more specific, information to offer? What did your written exam consist of?

    Thanks in advance.

My last few job interviews have included questions on teh following

process of completing a variance/zonign application.
questions to assess understand of community issues
questions related to applicability of a planning document and its contents
a scenario examination and provide comment
preparation of briefing notes for senior staff

The best advice I can give you is to read the comp/official plan and have a general understanding of the key issues/programs/ideas that the plan is built ion. There is no need to memorize it, just know key catch phrases. Also look into how things are done there (ie role of public consultation and political processes).
Too lazy to beat myself up for being to lazy to beat myself up for being too lazy to... well you get the point....

You'll need a general understanding of CEQA, the State Subdivision Map Act, and the Planning and Zoning Requirements out of the Governor's Office of Planning and Research. Here's a link from CalAPA

    Test Update

Thanks for the help! The test went well. It was mainly logic and reading/comprehension. A few zoning questions and a few where you had to read through an ordinance and find important information.

Thanks again for the study tips.
