"New Urban" communities

I've been reading about various "New Urban" developments here in the SE USA, mainly in the Atlanta area. Some of them include -

Are you seeing these types of developments appear in your area? If so, are they somewhat affordable? It seems like most that I have found are very expensive and may price out many of the people who would like to live in them, myself included. What are your thoughts on theses types of areas? Do you think they will last or are they just a trendy fad movement?

Most that I have seen are not very affordable, generally they are built for the upper-middle class. I think you should ask yourself, is most new residential contruction 'affordable'. Housing that is desirable to many will cost more than stucco and snout garages. Either way, most new housing is rather expensive and the same questions could be asked of 'sprawl vernacular' development. As far as the fad aspect to it, I don't believe it to be, but what's that worth right?

Harbortown - pricy, but one of the first neo-traditional developments.

Uptown - really trying to include an affordable element. It is a part of a HUD grant that removed some truly awful public housing and is replacing it with market and affordable housing. Uptown has really made a difference in that section of town.
