    It's the Chinese Cyburbia!

I found this site while looking through the referrer logs of Cyburbia:
    http://www.ubbs.cn/

Here's what they had to say about Cyburbia:

    Cyburbia专业门户网站Cyburbia是面向城市规划者以及其他对城市与建成环境感兴趣的人们开发的,运行历史最为久远的一个互联门户网站,它将与规划学与城市化相关的网络资源整合并且建立起了一个的可供选择的目录框架。Cyburbia还包括了关于邮寄清单和新闻组织等讯息,同时还提供了随时更新的公告栏以及数量庞大的图库。
I have no idea what it says. Right now, I'm just beginning to decode Hebrew.

I have to learn Chinese, though, just so I can learn about what's going on in this thread:

That's pretty cool. I ran it through an on-line translation website and got this:

Cyburbia specialized gateway website Cyburbia is faces the urban planning and all that with completes the people to the city which the environment is interested to develop, a movement history most remote interconnection gateway website, it and the urbanized related network resources conformity and will establish with the plan study to be possible to supply the choice the table of contents frame. Cyburbia also included about has mailed news and so on detailed list and news organization, meanwhile has provided the announcement fence as well as the quantity which renewed as necessary is huge 图库.
I had to go through three of those translation sites before I found one that wasn't blocked by our firewall...what the hell? Our computer guys baffle me sometimes.

and hopefully they're not reading this...

and here I thought it said:
Cyburbia is the online home of our next emperor. They call him Stan. All hail Emperor Stan from Cyburbia. May he live long, have a bottomless cup of coffee, and enjoy the fruits of his day.

You know, this could be a great new FAC contest... Translation Contest Chinese Cyburbia Thread #1, #2, #3...

Your work firewall is probably set to block inappropriate content. Most likely your IT wizards have wised up to the fact that you can run an english language site through some translations sites and it acts like a proxy throwing off the firewall into thinking you are accessing something "safe". For instance,

You try to go to wideworldofporn.com ----->firewall blocks it.
You then go to the google translator and choose english to english translation of wideworldofporn ----->firewall sees google and lets you view it.

Of course there are non-porn applications to this because many site-blockers and filters block science sites and things like that where the software thinks it is inappropriate but it really isn't.

I think I've found a new guiding principle by which to live my life.

Or a new .sig line. I haven't decided yet.

The joys of poor translation software. From this post:

Our plan differs to the actual construction far? As a urban planning worker, I deeply felt the present plans the impetuous wind, on the paper the picture after all is attractive but the actual construction actually does not gather the people's desires, but at the same time we actually at the sigh overseas urban construction are how good, the historical culture protection are how complete, asked: Can't we do? The hope listens to everybody the opinion
It's a planner lamenting on the sad state of historic preservation in China, admiring preservation efforts in other countries, and asking "why can't we do that here?" There's also a theme familiar to planners in the US: "The pretty renderings don't match the finished product."

Yeah. No ****. I'm diggin the picture of the chick and the fat guy drinking beer makes sense on a planning site, but what's with the homoerotic Vegas stuff? Especially why is the guy's avatar a white guy with a wife beater on?

Maybe we could get our good friends to translate.

Seriously, after browsing around for a bit using Babelfish, you can get the gist of a post, despite the poor translation. It's fascinating! I feel like I'm eavesdropping, though.

EDIT: I found another Chinese planning message board!
    http://www.china-up.com/bbs/
I can't get Babelfish to translate anything there, though.

    I like http://www.google.com/language_tools

My husband says that it translates Hebrew and Arabic pretty accurately. Also you can translate an entire web site using it too.

My username feels so... inadequate! Now I'm thinking of changing to Bang bang bean

What's with "Sends the placard" and "Money"? They have to pay to participate and display current funds?

Are you sure you want to be "Wood inch?"

Some of those usernames would make GREAT emo band names.

    Somewhat related.....

My company manufactures floor cones.....those tall yellow or orange cones that warn you of SLIPPERY FLOOR or CAUTION, usually including a logo of a person slipping and falling.

We print most of the cones in English and English-Spanish. However, lately some of our contracts have been for the market in Japan and Poland. Our artwork tech used internet translation sites to develop the silk screens for printing on these cones. When we were inspecting the final product we were having some good jokes concerning what the translations really said. (Not really, but we have good time, yes?)

Doesn't look that busy compared to the other one (http://www.china-up.com/bbs/). Unfortunately, I can't get any translators to work on that forum; I can only tell it's a planning-related board by copying and pasting individual posts into a translation engine.

Go to http://www.china-up.com/, and it looks like a general planning site. Those pages will translate - see http://babelfish.altavista.com/babel...hina-up.com%2F

Check out their coverage of a planning conference (http://babelfish.altavista.com/babel....asp%3fid%3d17 ). Scroll down to "sponsor unit."

Maybe it's good PR, maybe it's to increase the potantial client base of private planning firms in the US - I don't know.. I'd like to know what the intention of APA's China outreach program is before I pass judgement.

Bumping this thread, because I found another Chinese planning-related message board while exploring referrer logs.

gongzi.cn - link is to the Google English translation. Looks like much of the site is visible only to registered users.

The china-up.com site is indeed a general planning site. Except for the two administrative forums (at the bottom of its home page), the main forums can be roughly translated as (my translation with brief description):

    -Open Forum (all topics)

-Registered Planners' Forum (exams, reference books, curriculum, etc.)

-Public Forum (provides a forum for the general public to ask questions and participate in discussions)

    -Cities and Villages

    -CCPD (China City Planning Database)

    -Urban Planning

-World of Photography (the purpose of this forum is for planing related photography, although some contributers have submitted general photography items)

    -Experts' Forum

-Showcase (for members to showcase their completed plans or for criticism and suggestions on drafts)

Apparently, the Google translator is far superior to what was available 4 years ago. The original Chinese characters listed now translate to the text below with the help of goggles translator.

"Cyburbia Cyburbia is a professional portal for urban planners and other urban and built environment for people interested in the development, operation history, the most distant one Internet portal, which will study and planning and urban integration of relevant network resources and the establishment of played a framework for the alternative directory. Cyburbia also includes information on mailing lists and news organizations, information, and also provided to update the bulletin board and a large number of the gallery."
