IT background looking for planning career

I have over 15 years of experience in computer programming and systems analysis. That experience is with the telecom industry and a financial institution. How can I leverage that background to get into the planning area? I am looking into GIS as an avenue. Is that a good way to go?

GIS would be a good way to go to become involved in planning-related activities. You could use your experience in programming for GIS application development, or do SDE administration, etc.
