    Hello from God's Country

I'm not a planner or architect, just an ex-teacher turned computer programmer from New York's Southern Tier, aka "God's Country". Jamestown, where I currently live, is a small town mistakenly labeled a "city", but in fact, all of the SoTier, especially Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Allegany Counties are primarily rural in character. Because of the loss of agriculture -- dairying and truck farming -- and the small manufacturing plants, this area is more akin to the struggling rural areas of the Midwest than to the nearby metro areas like Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse or Pittsburgh.

My training as an historian of American social and political ideas, and my experience in politics and in government service will probably put me at odds with of the "urbanists".

Welcome from a southern tier east escapee.
All these years the people said he’s actin’ like a kid.
He did not know he could not fly, so he did.

Welcome from the Hoosier State along the Ohio River.

Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves?
Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here?
Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

Are you sure you're not hurt ?
No. Just some parts wake up faster than others.
Broke parts take a little longer, though.

LD (may I call you LD?) - Welcome from the Florida panhandle where we're watching the election results to witness how screwed it up this time. A pulse on politics and gov't is a huge benefit in the planning profession (especially if we want to keep our jobs).

    Welcome from Chicagoland!!!

Alot of us "urbanists" have vacation properties in the country, so we shouldn't be at odds with you.
I'm sorry. Is my bias showing?

Let's not be didactic in this profession, because that is a path to disillusion and irrelevancy.

    Hello, from Irving, TX!
"We do not need any other Tutankhamun's tomb with all its treasures. We need context. We need understanding. We need knowledge of historical events to tie them together. We don't know much. Of course we know a lot, but it is context that's missing, not treasures." - Werner Herzog, in Archaeology, March/April 2011

I enjoyed myself in Oswego. Those SUNY goth and grundge babes are my type.

Linda_D, ever been to Oswego? I love to eat polluted lake fish.
