    Biggest Party

During a conversation with an acquaintance during the not-so-Super-Bowl, it was said that the post World Series party in Boston when the Red Sox won must have been the biggest party of the century. I suggested that the end of World War II was the biggest party.

What say ye Cyburbia? What was the biggest and/or greatest party since let's say 1800?

Big can be in terms of importance, masses of participants, intensity of partying, etc...

Supposedly when the Patriot's won their first Superbowl, it was a record number assembly for the parade in Boston - but who knows -

My vote goes for the celebration that occurred on December 31, 1999. People all over the country were either hiding in a bunker somewhere dreading Y2K, or out having the time of their lives. I was one of those people who decided to party like it was 1999! Hands down, that was the most exciting time of my life!

I can't comment on the party after WWII, but I have to imagine that was pretty intense too!

I'm sorry. Is my bias showing?

In terms of Sports Celebrations, the official/unofficial head count was supposidly around 2 to 3 million in and around downtown chicago and the parade route for the Chicago White Sox World Series victory in '05. Boston may make a big national stink about their poor showings in baseball history, but Chicago has then trumped by a long shot with two futile franchises that combined (up to 2005) had not won a world series in over 180 combined years.

I was at the center of that party (Kenmore Square) and it was indeed big. In one instant, hundreds of thousands of people poured into the streets yelling and screaming and began marching toward one place (Fenway Park). Every horn in the entire city honked continuously all through the night. Helicopters hovered overhead while riot police fired tear gas and attempted to push the crowd back. It was one of the most amazing moments in time.

The parade a few days later was more subdued, but definitely huge. City estimates were 3.2 million (overshadowing the White Sox parade).

Ok in my short 23 years of being around the biggest parties or party atmospheres i can actually remember were our bicentennial- although i was only a little one i can still remember being taken into the city that day and seeing the tall ships etc.

Sydney Olympics, once the torch arrived in Sydney it was party on, kinda weird, when it came through my town there was this crazy intense feeling that something awesome was going to happen! The best couple of weeks in our fair city- turning up to events everyone was friendly, just walking randomly on the streets and public transport was great!

Oh and of course world cup last year- the feeling in oz was awesome- just party mode 24/7, from the time we qualified (i was at the game, most amazing feeling) till we got ripped off by the ref against italy!

On a continental scale, I would have to say New Years 99/00. Just think of all the people stayed up to watch the ball drop in Times Square. I know of hundreds of people who fled to Canada because of the lower drinking age.

But then again, you need to define party. Is it a group of people within one specific geographic location, or is it measured by the number of empty beer cups in a tower?
