When an applicant or elected offical thanks me personally in a public forum shall I:
a. grin and bask.
b. nod and mouth thank you discretely.
c. stare blankly ahead.
d. pull my prepared speech out of my pocket.
e. other.
You may think that this response should come naturally, but every time it happens I feel like a deer in headlights for some strange reason.
How about you take a gander at making an executive decision for once, huh?

And pass on the thanks to your staff if appropriate. Elected officials (or clients in my private practice case) sometimes only see the contact person. Praise in public, punish in private.

I'd change it to a poll, but I'm exhausted after getting from one side of the thread title to the other... 
I usually thank them right back, for the kickback (Usually in the form of a sack with a "$" sign on it) that I received earlier in the day...
