STANFEST 2007 in Grand Rapids Michigan on June 9, 2007!

I would first like to welcome Decatur Hawk into the honorary realm of Standom as the Co-Chair of Stanfest 2007. Maister will still have notable and significant input, but is looking forward to enjoying a year off to enjoy potential tours.

While Grand Rapids is in Michigan, they have not realized that the rest of the state is in a recession. This is most notable in the sky line filled with new buildings and crane towers. Having said that, there are multiple possibilities for early afternoon tours! Please select which guided tour you would be most interested in. Note they will most be walking tours since downtown area is for the most part pedestrian accessible. Regardless I will be willing to put together information on all the tours if you decide that you want to do a self guided tour.

I have also included several links for your information, and you can see a preview of Stanfest in this thread on Grand Rapids! http://www.cyburbia.org/forums/showthread.php?t=26630

How about a walking tour of the Heartside neighborhood and a tour down BUtterworth Dr. to see the giant incinerator smokestack

I hope Founders Taproom is on the itinerary!

Given the dates proposed, there was a two way tie for first and the second date does not work for a couple of the regulars (including me).

So pending a complete shift in availability, Yes, the stone has been chiseled!

Pending question for all would be... Will you be in attendance?

I'm willing to make the drive out to Grand Rapids on June 9th. I like that town second-best in Michigan, and have had a lot of fun there in the past.

Can we see Ford's gravesite? I'm dying to see it!

True that, but I had to do something to break up the doldrum that is Friday afternoon.

Whne you said Ford's gravesite I thought that was either Henry or a smart @$$ed remark about the company. I actually live not too far from either of those Fords. Now President Ford, I've been to his museum a couple of times - even over to the fish ladder. I'd like to see that too.

At first I was going to pout about GR being a half hour farther drive than K-zoo, but maybe I will make it after all....

Yeah, President Ford. I've seen his museum before too, although it was while I was in high school. All joking aside, I want to see what kind of tribute they've put together for him, and I really did think that his grave site was right there.

Yes, it is right there about 100 feet from the museum in downtown Grand Rapids. They have a hill side tomb that over looks the Grand River and the east side of downtown. It is simple yet still manages to have a dramatic impact.

I am not sure I will be in Michigan that weekend but I will try. I was hoping for Memorial Day weekend or
    June 16th.

Isn't the Ford Museum right next to the freeway?

Can anyone suggest a dog-friendly hotel near the venue? If a destination is within driving distance, they go where I go.

I might take a three-day weekend, so I can see the Ford Library, and maybe check out more of Detroit on the way back.

    Bear & Katie

Count that lovable and cudly non-planning bruin.....Bear.....and his lovely wife (Katie) as IN for Stanfest III. Tentative plans are to stay in a downtown hotel, hopefully within walking distance of THE BOB.

Dan.....Two regulars at annual Stanfests can provide you with info and directions on things to do on your return trip.....DetroitPlanner with info on The Motor City and Bear Up North with info on Toledo.

As a resident of the city of GR I am willing to help out where needed. I do plan on attending the festivities. If anyone needs anything, feel free to get a hold of me.

I think that what we end up doing may depend on the number of people that actually attend. The smaller the number, the more flexible we may be. Perhaps as we get closer to the date, we can figure out how many people may attend. (On a side note, I wonder if I could use my connections at the GR Press to make a local story out of this. Is this something that would interest you Dan?)

I would imagine that most people attending will be staying at a downtown hotel. While there are a number of things worth visiting outside of downtown GR (i.e. Yesterdogs), I would imagine that our focus would be more on downtown.

One thing worth mentioning (and I'm not trying to downplay GR in any way), but I think some people may be a little dissapointed at how "quiet" downtown GR is on a Saturday afternoon, although hopefully the warm weather will bring people out. And I havn't checked the schedule to see if there is some sort of event going on that day. That being said, we should definitely have a good time!

How insulting! Dan, you are helping to perpetuate the stereotype that the only thing people ever do in GR is attend Dutch Reformed services day and night. I'll have you know there is more than that going on downtown! See for yourself!

Okey dokey, have things all situated. My friend from high school lives in Lowell, and I emailed her to say I would be up that way and maybe we can hang out. She then offered to babysit while I am downtown!

Soooo, I will be there - just let me know when and where and the schedule of events!

Then there is the Catholic groups too. We have a Pope approved Polish Basilica, and of course my church… St. Andrews Cathedral. Ironically, there the guy who paid for the construction of Fountain Street Church was Catholic and want it to be the cathedral, but refused to give up ownership to the Diocese… so he gave it to a non-denomination group.
