Tons of free swag at the exhibits, hopefully i win either a portable dvd player or an iPod.

Independence Brew Pub is REAL close to the conference. Where are we meeting, getting a table or by the bar?

I'm thinking of heading over there now actually...

If anyone here wants to go grab a beer, I'm interested, shoot me a PM.

    Live report from the floor

I am at the APA national conference attending the Bettman Symposium called "Climate Change and Planners." Ned Farquhar from the NRDC is presenting. On his first slide, I note the following: "To addess energy security and global warming, we must address land use and transportation."

This is a live report from Wanigas? on location in Philadelphia, enabled with Palm SmartPhone technology. Over and out.

    More from the floor

More things I learned from the "Climate Change and Planners" session:

    1) Learned a new term, "energy-sensible siting," which was used in the context of appropriate site selection for green building construction.

    2) Website about the climate change cases that are in the courts: www.warminglaw.com

    3) The construction regulators can influence the pace of green building construction by adopting green building codes and having a certification program.

The Oatmeal Stout is real tasty too! Plan on having some of those for the 5 o'clock Alefest.

Dan, I'm impressed with the amount of free stuff you gathered. I've got 2 decks of retired Las Vegas casino cards and a couple of pens...I need to step it up I guess.

Why You Should Always Have a Geographer Along!

RJ took TN to the laefest in Philly today. They left to have dinner with his co-workers and their S.O.'s. RJ told me a couple days ago, no problem, it's just a couple blocks from the laefest.

They got lost. In the rain. Never did find the restaurant. Sheesh. In a grid city? Ended up dining at a Brazilian steakhouse.

I would say if I'd been along we'd have never gotten lost. But if I'd been along we wouldn't have left the laefest!

Planners getting lost on a grid? When all of the street signs have the block number on them?

. . . and then eating at Fogo de Chao?

Indeed you can usually tell when the concepts of democracy and citizenship are weakening. There is an increase in the role of charity and in the worship of volunteerism. These represent the élite citizen's imitation of noblesse oblige; that is, of pretending to be aristocrats or oligarchs, as opposed to being citizens.

    You big mouth, smartass.

TN and Boiker took some good pics at the Laefest... Mine came out just OK. I'll post when I return to Florida.

TN and I had a nice dinner together notwithstanding we were soaking wet.

Snowing this morning so it looks like no baseball game tonight.

In our defense, I would say that the Brazillian food was probably better anyway. Plus, I think that we were on the wrong side of Broad St. and did not have a full city map.

Like i said, you just need more beer after a long day. It always picks me right up.
I probably won't meet up with you tonight b/c I got free tickets for a movie at the film festival and seeing how it's almost over and i haven't been to see anything yet i should probably not pass up the opportunity.

and btw - mention to the crew that i'm strongly encouraging everyone to show up for happy hour tomorrow at the Cantina Los Caballitos. $2 draughts and $2 margaritas from 4-6pm. Good food too!

It's at 1651 E. Passyunk Ave. (12th & Morris) so that's the Tasker/Morris stop on the subway (orange line) or the 23 bus down 12th St. to Morris. It's about a 30 minute walk from Market St. but a nice one. Walk down 8th, 9th, or 10th St. down to Tasker then turn right onto Tasker and, at the fountain, bear left onto Passyunk. The Cantina is the bright orange building on your left.

If you're on South St. you can walk down Passyunk (the diagonal street between 4th & 5th). the whole way.

I guess they're still editing the photos in order to protect the innocent... and the guilty...

    pics

Pics will come when i return. My laptop is a dog with USB 1.1. It'll take a GD day and half to download them from my camera and post them. I'm lucky this page even comes up.

Anyway, the sessions were hit and miss for me. Some wonderful, others crap. mobile sessions got cancelled due to the lovely weather and it generally was 40-45, windy, rainy, and cloudy each and every day.

Despite that: Philly is a surprising town. Nice neighborhoods, exceptionally walkable, good transit, and wonderful history and public building architecture.

I met up with Dandy, Poncho, Jresta, RJ, Luckless, TOFB, JNA, MDplanner, hilldweller, (hope I'm not forgetting anyone) at various times and multiple laefests.

Some of the early results are in...

...my camera doesn't seem to want to take pictures in low light, but I've posted in the Philly gallery. TN and boiker have the good pictures.

I kept my streak alive....having not attended a single session or mobile workshop in the past 5 years.

TO...: d_w, boiker and I visited the Mutter yesterday. Holy cow!!!

I had a good time Sat and Sun meeting everybody, even though I don't drink.

As the saying goes what happened at Philly stayes in Philly.
    Oddball
Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves?
Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here?
Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

No. Just some parts wake up faster than others.
Broke parts take a little longer, though.
