    Small towns on the edge

An interesting article from Sunday's Des Moines Register regarding a small town here in Iowa that probably shouldn't even be incorporated. It brings up a lot of issues about small rural towns.

Wow. I am shocked but not surprised by this. Here in Michigan, elements of these sorts of events and circumstances can be seen daily. Either in rural townships or rural villages, families, grudges, lack of knowledge (nice term for small town idiocy) do get in the way of making sound judgements for the benefit of the larger community.

This was one of my favorite quotes:

"I have learned one thing on this," Phillips said last week. "It doesn't do any good to do anything nice for the community."

Sounds like they need to just give up and let the County run everything from now on.

I'm amazed that places like this can still exist today. The reason(s) for their existence ended about 30 years ago. Once the current old people die off, I doubt anyone will be left that cares.
I'm sorry. Is my bias showing?

Every day is today. Yesterday is a myth and tomorrow an illusion.

Wish the article at that link still existed, I wanted to read it.

While working in southern Iowa, I worked on the paperwork to dis-incorporate the town of Athelstan. It was requested by the town as they were not in position to continue to run it and dis-incorporating it was saught to actually improve things for its residents.

My boss would like to walk by my office and give me crap, quoting Oppenheimer and Hindu scripture, "I am become death, the destroyer of worlds".

The company that I work for has been doing some interesting work for the town of Newton Iowa. It is being funded by a Department of Labor -ETA grant.
