    Former Detroiter, future planner...

Hello to all of you - I am new to Cyburbia; originally from Detroit (born and raised in the suburbs but of late I lived on Forest near Wayne State U). I moved to Chicago in October of '06 to finish my BA and then to get a Masters in Urban Planning. I originally went to the University of Michigan (pre-architecture), but left after 3 1/2 years.

I spent the last year I was in Detroit trying to make a difference - I was trying to open a bar/restaurant, or buy a couple of apartment buildings, but I encountered so much resistance. No help from the community, other business owners, real estate agents, banks, the city, etc. Living near Detroit my whole life, I always imagined what a great place it could be - there are (were) so many amazing historical and significant buildings that lay waste. Most everyone from the suburbs won't even go downtown, unless it's for a game or to go to the casino, and then they immediately walk to the parking structure and head back out to go home. A shame, and a waste. Great buildings being razed, real estate sitting vacant with bogus "For Sale" signs on the door.

I needed to move away from the city and see a place that is working so I could gain some perspective on my hometown. I look forward to talking to all of you!

Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here?

No. Just some parts wake up faster than others.

Welcome! As a lifelong metro Detroiter, I feel your pain. I too thought of staying here my whole life and making a difference. But with the horrible economy and political scene, I gave up. I am looking to relocate to Florida.

Welcome, I live two houses off of Warren Avenue in Detroit and am a WSU allumni. Detroit is not for those who give up easy. It can be frustrating, but being that I grew up a mile from my home and was raised to challenge myself to help those who need help I find my job to be incredibly rewarding. My primary work involves getting agreement between the State, the City, and the suburbs on projects that will benefit the area as a whole.

Welcome from a fellow ex-pat Michigander here in Chicagoland!!

I work for a prominent Northwest suburb, but live in a prominent 1st ring western suburb.
I'm sorry. Is my bias showing?

The ends can justify the means.

Thanks - please don't think I gave up - i just felt like I wasn't getting anywhere, and I really didn't have the skills I needed to make a difference. That is why I chose to go back to school. I fully intend to return to Detroit, and I am confident that things will be great there. I look forward to talking with you - I admire the fact that you are dedicated to making that a better area. I hope to do the same one day soon.

Welcome from a bedroom suburb of "Little Detroit".....aka "Toledo". The Glass City has always played in the shadow of The Motor City, but being much smaller the problems of Toledo seem much smaller.

Glad you have joined Club Cyburbia.
