Things that make me feel old

Every year it seems there are more and more things that make think "I don't get it" or saying things that my parents used to say. A couple of examples:

Test Messaging: Why? It a phone. It allows voice communication. This is a step backwards people, think about it!

My Space: Badly designed personal web pages. Why is this any kind of improvement over the old Anglefire/GeoCities pages of yore?

PDA/Cell phones: I liked it better when smaller cellphone =cooler cell phone. I don't want go back to carrying around a (albeit thin) brick.

iPods: Actually, iPods are pretty damn cool, scratch that.

80's retro: I actually heard a college age girl (rocking a side pony tail and leg warmers no less) say, "Gag me with a straw!" It's "spoon", you fool! If you going to rehash my childhood at least get it right!

Using, like, "like" waaaay to often: Granted this started when I was a child but today's young'uns take it to an aggravating extreme. I'm beginning to think some of these kids can't speak without this verbal crutch.

Flip flops: Flip flops are for the beach, shoes are for the sidewalk, damnit!

So what are those crazy kids up to these days that really grinds your gears?

Saying things my parents used to say:

    Turn the lights off!

    Pick up your towel!

You're not wearing that (stiletto heels on a 13 year old!!)

    Turn your music down!

I can't figure your Ipod, Mp3 player, digital camera, phone out!

Being called 'Sir'. That does it every time. And when you tell the young whipersnappers not to call you that... they look confused....

Being asked what I what to do/have on my 50th birthday.

Is it just another birthday or is there something special about turning 50 ?

Many years back I went on a date with a woman, well, in retrospect, she was more of a girl. We were talking and she asked me what kind of music I liked. At the time I was listening to a lot of oldy rock and roll - Buddy Holly, Elvis, and early Beatles. She pipes in, "Oh, I love the oldies, like, music from the 70s!"

    Ouch.

That was the beginning of a long evening, and not in a good way.

The worse recently was I was at the store with my son and the clerk asked me how old was my grandson. Double ouch.

I'm right in the midst of the generation that is responsible for all of this (I'm currently 25) and I feel out of touch with my own peers...

(This does not concern me, however)
You get all squeezed up inside/Like the days were carved in stone/You get all wired up inside/And it's bad to be alone

You can go out, you can take a ride/And when you get out on your own/You get all smoothed out inside/And it's good to be alone

When I fill out surveys or forms that indicate certain age groups, I realize that I'm no longer in the 25-34 range.

Realizing that I now go to the gym to prolong my life instead of to build muscle and check out the women.... it is really sad.

Seeing a cute woman walk into the building and realizing I'm old enough to be her father.

See a couple young enough to be my kids with a baby.

Deciding which is worse-grey hair or no hair.

Realizing that in less than 10 years, I'll be old enough to join AARP and be able to get senior discounts.

I recently saw the Buzzcocks greatest hits on sale at Best Buy. It's also been 20+ years since the Clash's "Rock the Casbah" was a hit

My nephew makes me feel old because I remember feeding his Mom (my sister) and changing her stinky diaper.

Wow, you guys really are old!

Even though I'm part of the group to which you guys speak, I find myself feeling old at times. Just thinking that 1997 was 10 years ago is enough to make you feel old.

Also, seeing people my age with full-time jobs, getting married, going grocery shopping, having kids...it's a bit scary. It's like, wait a minute...that could be me in a few years.

Reading "This date in history" in the newspaper. Some days I think, wow, it was 22 years ago (or whatever) that that happened?!? Ted Bundy's execution was one that hit me recently.

    Let's see:

    • 10 year high school renunion (2 years ago )
    • Waking up sore after a game of softball
    • Realizing that you are same age as the "over the hill" running back and catcher on your favorite team
    • Realizing that your waist size and age are almost the same number
