    Greetings from Upstate NY

Hello! I am the mayor of a small village in Upstate NY, and looking forward to gaining more knowledge in planning and zoning.

I am not new to planning and zoning, having moved here 20 years ago from Manhattan, where I fought bad zoning that NYC tried to foist on my neighborhood!

Welcome from Indiana along the Ohio River.
    Oddball
Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves?
Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here?
Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

Are you sure you're not hurt ?
No. Just some parts wake up faster than others.
Broke parts take a little longer, though.

Welcome from +84 miles (135 km) (73 nautical miles) to the northeast.

I thought upstate was anything north and west of Westchester County.

that's what i feel, because if you talk to anyone who isn't from upstate and say, "I'm from NY." they inevitably say, "The City?" and then you have to shake your head and say, "No, about an hour north/south/east/west of Syracuse." and they say, "Where's that?" and then you have to say, "About X hrs from the City."

Welcome from the Capital Region! We are neighbors!

I remember reading a few months ago that your village had received a Quality Communities grant to do an economic development strategy. Whatever happened with that?

SGB, since the Thruway runs north-south until it reaches Albany, that doesn't quite make sense... Do you mean north of I-90?

Oops - my regional bias is showing. I rarely travel south of Albany, so I only really think of the E/W stretch of the Thruway from Albany. My bad.

    Hello, from Irving, TX!
"We do not need any other Tutankhamun's tomb with all its treasures. We need context. We need understanding. We need knowledge of historical events to tie them together. We don't know much. Of course we know a lot, but it is context that's missing, not treasures." - Werner Herzog, in Archaeology, March/April 2011

    welcome from downeast Maine -

I grew up in Syracuse NY so this is our perspective:

    downstate NY
is the Catskills and Westchester and Duchess County

    upstate NY i
s this general place that isn't the Capital area, is not the Adirondacks, and is not Syracuse

    Syracuse is Central NY

west of Syracuse to Buffalo is western NY

north of Watertown is the north country

then there is the Finger Lakes region which is the bottom towns of those lakes

the northway is that area north of Albany and south of Vermont, which is distinct in culture from the north country

and the city is, well, the city
