HIGHLIGHTS:

The discovery of more than 1,000 unexploded World War I-era munitions in newly placed sand on the beach just weeks before the start of the summer season has triggered a public-relations nightmare that no one saw coming.

And no one is sure how to deal with it.

Surf City Mayor Leonard T. Connors has pledged that the beaches will be open by Memorial Day, and the Borough Council has been debating an ordinance that would prohibit beachgoers from digging deeper than a couple of inches when they build sand castles this summer.

The fear is that there is more buried.
Is this another argument against beach replenishment ?
When I home visiting LBI, I might buy one of those t-shirts.

I had a feeling that sand pit on Fort Dix would be a bad idea! Seriously, where did they get that sand? Usually the stuff they quarry from inland pits just has globs of sticky clay. Those bombs can't be all that volatile if they were excavated, moved, and spread out there w/o any explosions.

The munitions ended up spread across the beaches after a hydraulic dredge sucked them up from the ocean floor 21/2 miles offshore at the "borrow site" the Army Corps used as its source of sand, Watson said.

The Jersey Shore is home to Earle Naval Weapons Station, Ft. Monmouth and the old Evans Area of Ft. Monmouth and Lakehurst Naval Air Station are less than 20 miles from Long Beach Island. It doesn't surprise me that they dumped it offshore. Every government body except NJ has seen the Shore fit for all of their trash. Even with the new laws the Army Corps still got a waiver to dump dredge spoils contaminated with dioxin/agent orange 10 miles off of Sea Bright, NJ.

I'm just surprised that there was that much AAA ordnance left over from WWI. Military aviation was in its infancy.

I'm surprised my buddy that has a house in Beach Haven hasn't mentioned this. I just spoke to him on Sunday. Apparently he isn't too concerned, even though he's really into LBI history.

Little Timmy Smith got more than he bargained for when he dug a three foot hole today for the moat of his sand castle! That's right.....he found Jimmy Hoffa! Apparently the US Army Corps inadvertently deposited Hoffa's body on this tranquil NJ seashore last year while rebuilding the beach.....blah blah blah.....

Mark my words on this one.....he he he.....

I remember swiming in Ocean City in the 1970's!!

my grandparents had a place at Chadwick Beach on the shore. I remember finding needles on the beach...and other medical waste... still love the shore though. They sold their place in the mid 80s.
