    If you HAD to relocate...

...anywhere in the world, which cities would be at the top of your list?

For the purpose of this thread, please don't factor-in:
-Whether you know anyone in the city
    -Any language barriers
-Any racial preferences (just in case)

Please list 10 cities (or as many as you like)....thanks.

    Mine:
    -Paris
    -Tokyo
    -New York
    -Sydney
    -Rio
    -Milan
    -Madrid
    -Cape Town
    -San Francisco
    -Singapore

    Montreal, near McGill
London, in the neighborhood near the botanic garden
    Bath, England
any town in the Cotswolds, England
    Kyoto, Japan
    Florence, Italy, near Lake Como
here, in Bar Harbor, but on the western bay

I can't limit this to cities, either... and my international travel experiences have been extremely limited! That said, I came up with:

    Portland, ME
    Seattle, WA
    Bar Harbor, ME
    Burlington, VT
    Keene Valley, NY
    Ullapool, Scotland

In the past, we actively considered relocating to some of these places... but we're staying put for now.

Off the top of my head:

    Savannah, GA (historic downtown)
    Charleston, SC (The Battery)
    Dublin
    London
    NYC
    Somewhere along the Cote d’Azur
    Somewhere in Japan

Realistic choices, given work and family constraints:

    Savannah, Charleston, St. Augustine, Chattanooga

top ten in the world in no particular order:

    Barcelona
    Milan
    San Francisco
    Santiago de Campostella (Spain)
    Buenos Aires
any big city in the Netherlands or Belgium
    Tokyo
    Saigon
    Melbourne
    Copenhagen

    honorable mentions:
    Vancouver
    Toronto
    Montreal

top ten domestic in this order:
    San Francisco
    Chicago
    Boston
    Hoboken/Jersey City
    Portland
    Asbury Park, NJ
    Pittsburgh
    Baltimore
    Seattle
    Denver

That's really it. Those are the only places i'd leave Philly for and only temporarily. You could only get me to sell my house for 5 or 6 of them.
Indeed you can usually tell when the concepts of democracy and citizenship are weakening. There is an increase in the role of charity and in the worship of volunteerism. These represent the élite citizen's imitation of noblesse oblige; that is, of pretending to be aristocrats or oligarchs, as opposed to being citizens.

I was born and raised there. Probably one of the best places to grow up in the USA. Too bad it's nothing but a playground for yuppies from NY, CT and Boston now. My old neighborhood is full of nothing but weekly booze rentals now.

Wow, if I HAD to relocate, then where would I want to live?

    In no particular order:

    - the Thousands Islands Parkway area, especially the area between Ivy Lea and Brockville, Ontario, Canada
    - the old town of Edinburgh, Scotland
    - old town of Galway, Ireland
    - Slanthill, Ireland, somewhere by the sanddunes and the coastlines
    - English Bay of Vancouver, BC, Canada
    - Bloor Street West Village in Toronto, Ontario, Canada
    - Brighton, England, by the pier
    - the islands of Lake Champlain, VT, USA
    - Chester and Liverpool, NS, Canada

Wow, I can't even come up with a tenth city on the list. Am I that picky? Or have I not travelled enough?

Anyways, I admit that this thread has me really thinking... what makes a place so special, desirable, and attractive to live?

Recently, I came across the "Best places to live in Canada" list and I'm not attracted to many of the top 50 cities that I've visited or been through. http://www.canadianbusiness.com/rank...olive/list.jsp

... I don't see why so many people are picking Copenhagen over Stockholm & Oslo. If you're going for gray, you may as well pick an interesting city

    In somewhat particular order:

    Portland, OR
    Minneapolis/St. Paul
    Chicago
    Toronto
    Gothenburg (Göteborg), Sweden
    Stockholm
    Oslo
    New York City
    San Francisco

    Honorable mentions (tied for 10th):
    Milwaukee
    Ottawa
    Trondheim, Norway
