Thread: Buffalo's Power Porches

    Buffalo's Power Porches

Buffalo has an unusually large collection of what I call Power Porches. These are the large monumentally scaled temple like porches often associated with Power and wealth. They take their cues from the ancient Greeks and Romans. Jefferson made this type of architecture popular in the US with his design of the Virginia Capital building in Richmond (recently renovated with spectacular results) Here is a small sample of Buffalo's residential Power Porches. These are the precursor porches to the much less tasteful McMansion Porches of many of our lovely contemporary subdivisions. Enjoy

A few of those look very tasteful, the rest look out of scale with the size of the building and a little tacky.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Even though I've never been to Buffalo, I've been impressed with the quality of the housing from the photos I see on this site.
