Things that make you go ... HMMMMM:8:

No, this is not a Young MC tribute thread....

A City Commissioner e-mailed me a link to a job opportunity in a neighboring community. This makes me go ..... HMMMM.... what is the motive here, what is going on?

Please share your ... HMMM moments.

Actually, that song belonged to C&C Music Factory, not Young MC.

Plenty of HMM moments led me to my current job.

That's pretty bizarre. Maybe this guy has a problem with you and wants you out? If so, probably means you're doing a good job.

When experienced and professional employees move on to other employment, and the management never bothers to ask why, let alone offer exit interviews.

    Say it with me: clueless.

When a department's staff (not mine) has no employees with more than 3 years of experience with the city, but before the new director came several employees had 10+ years. Oh, and in the time the new director has been there (four years), the entire staff has turned over in a 10 person department.

Yet the administration has not put together the cause...

"Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country."

why the management allows the problem employee to wreak havoc on the entire department making a dozen people miserable rather than just axing the one .

I agree with TO MULTIPLE JOBS in one agency/dept.

Is it staff turn over or are they expanding ?

First, I'd see what the problem was and how wide spread it was. Second, just in case, I'd update the resume' and discretely check other jobs out. It may be nothing, but I would not take any chances.

As for places that always have openings, Alexandria is one, though I think their problem is being too close to D.C. Port Charlotte in Florida is another that always has openings. This include that mass mailing they did last year, with signing and longevity bonuses.

Ironically, I see Alexandria has another position open. I also saw that ULI seems to have had a house cleaning.

Is there a Cyburbian out there who currently works for (highly unlikely?)....or has recently worked with the City of Alexandria (highly likely?) who might be able to provide some insight into this phenomenon???

This almost makes me think we need to create a database of municipalities not to work for, with a few concise words on reason. (e.g. "rampant sexual harrassment")

I can see the reasoning for this, but from a mod point of view I'd have to discourage it. We try to avoid taking public pot shots at particular employers. This is part of how the TOWN NEXT DOORTM phenomenon was born on Cyburbia. Of course, there's nothing to say you can't encourage a private message.

I agree.....plus, someday the City of Alexandria might want to pay me $175,000 a year to fix their problems

I had this happen to me once. One of my directors passed along a job ad, then later mentioned it. His attitude was "Why would you want to stay here. You should be someplace where they will pay you decent money." I applied, got the job, and nearly doubled my salary.

I hear you. I'm working for my current boss for the third time...three different jurisdictions. I guess he likes me.

No need. The Commissioner and I had a discussion and the Commissioner suggested that I am squandering my talents and could be financially and socially much better off in other places. The Commissioner is right, but I like what I'm doing and often times leaving a good situation makes things worse. The grass isn't always greener.
