    Retail sub-groups

In city planning there is 3 sub groups of retail. From the magazine I'm looking at.

1- stores in the CBD (stor-fronts)
    2 -ribbon
    3 -center

    A uniform and non-uniform planning.

Anyone know want they are talking about and have dates when it started and who started it?

I'll have a shot at it.

CBD, i'm guessing shops in commercial buildings, proberbly with offices or flats above.

Ribbon, development along highways and roads.

Centre, out of town shopping centres.

    Hmm?

Of course that in N America. European retail patterns are quite different to that.

Ribbon development in Detroit has always meant the older french based system of land division where long narrow parcels were tightly placed so that everyone had access to transportation (the river).

It is only a guess but I would think that:

The Stores in a CBD is large grouping of multi story mixed use buildings (retail, office, living... and so on) that has a pedestrian access feel.

Ribbon development is the classic auto oriented strip mall style development.

Town Center is a smaller version of the CBD, but also houses governmental uses and is recognized as the center of commerce, government, cultural, and similar uses.

M'skis definition is how I would describe the three concepts you mention.
