    Sign code dilemma

Our tiny town prides itself on having a small town feel. We have design guidelines that are meant to ensure quality signs that are appropriate, especially in our Historic District. Recently there has been a plethora of nonconforming signs and advertising that can be seen around town. While this is an enforcement issue what I would really like is to be able to make a case that economic development can be supported by quality signage. Any advice, resources or examples? Any ideas for how to assist businesses in being more savvy?

You might try the National Main Street program at http://mainstreet.org/. They have some general sign standards for traditional and historic central business districts. They may have some supporting information since they have been dealing with small downtowns for decades. If your community if a member you should be able to get some information. If not, they may charge a fee.

You might want to take a look at the International Sign Association website (http://www.signs.org) and similar sites...

Even though it's a pro-sign group (obviously) and you may have to filter through a lot of sales-pitch/propoganda-type stuff, they probably will have information on good signage vs. bad signage, since a bad sign is going to make the sign industry look bad as well as deter customers, so it's in their interest to comply with rules and produce good quality work.

    Might be worth looking at.
