USA TODAY article: An urban neighborhood stoops to conquer

    http://www.usatoday.com/life/columni...nal-word_N.htm

An article about the pleasure of sitting on the stoop, not the porch, and how it helps neighborhood interaction.

    I don't have either a stoop or a porch.

Do you hang out out front or in your backyard ?

I'm definitely a front steps guy. That's where most of my phone calls are made from - let's me people watch and say hello to passers-by while I chat on the phone.

I have my evening smoke on the porch and over the years have come to meet the neighborhood's afternoon joggers and dog-walkers. It's a good place to be. My boys and I spend a lot of time in the street in front of the house skateboarding...and wave at the cars that pass through. It's a good feeling to feel like it's "our" neighborhood rather than the neighborhood in which we live.

By comparison, my neighbors are young, creative professionals and socially capable. They often have people over for barbecues and such but opt for the back yard. I seldom see them out front except to mow. They are pleasant and friendly but the difference is very striking to the previous owners of the home who would have enormous touch-football games in the middle of the street with all of the neighborhood kids.

I hang out on the roof top deck on the top of Heritage Hill, overlooking the Grand Rapids Skyline.

    well.....

In the back only if I'm in the pool......ask my dogs why Oh and the backyard gets all the sun...... The front is where its at right now and it has nothing to do with meeting my meth addicted neighbors

My last house had a stoop, the only time I sat on it was to hand out candy for halloween. My fenced backyard with covered porch, and backyard garden are where I spend my outside, around the house time at my current house.

Now in college, we hung out on an old, beat up couch on the front stoop/porch watching the cars drive by...mostly when we didn't have any money to do anything else. I'm thinking that people sitting on old, beat up couches don't really add to neighborhood interaction
