I was driving to the movies last night and couldn't believe it when I saw the price posted at a BP Station. 1.49! I thought it was some mistake, for all the other stations were no less than $1.74, including another BP Station a mile away. Needless to say, I filled up. When I asked the clerk why the prices were so low she said that she had no idea, but enjoy it while it lasts.
I paid $1.59 a gallon yesterday. It's been fluctuating between $1.50 and $1.70 for some time now. Rural stations tend to be a bit cheaper, as are stations that have another station across the street to compete with.
It's about 94 cents a litre where I live. Using dodgey arithmetic, I think that equals about $US2.84 per US gallon.
Prices have actually fallen here recently. We were told during the last price spike (around Xmas) it was caused by increased consumption in the northern hemisphere, due in turn to your severe winter. Something like 70% of the price of fuel in Australia is taxes and excise.
One of the local independents used to be a reliable place to buy relatively cheap gas. Its been re-branded as a Mobile, and they are now the most expensive on my way to work.
$2.29/gallon for premium. Yipes. It was $1.79 at one point.
Here regular gas is around 80 cents the liter... (3.03 bucks per gallon)

I paid about 1.86 for 87 octane last week.... and that is on the low end. Gas is very expensive in Westchester County... as is everything else. Amazingly... gas is usually cheaper in the city than in the burbs.

Don't have a car, but I walked by a station today at $3.89 for reg and $4.09 for premium.
Expect more increase in the coming days. The troubles in Nigeria about oil refineries will affect the price of the global market. Oil prices here also increased just this morning.

It has jumped 25 cents in the last week.
I found it for $2.98 at 5:45 this morning, and I felt just plain lucky at the Petro Express (thanks Hugo Chavez), they usually do their price adjustments about lunchtime. Otherwise, I've seen it in the $3.20 to $3.40 range at all others.

It is around $3.49 here around here.
Sad part is it is so high because refineries are shutting down to change the blends from winter production to summer production, and the EPA will not permit any new oil refineries from being constructed in the US.
As if that is not bad enough, many people are blaming oil companies saying that they are too greedy with record profits, but turns out that per gallon, you pay more to the state and federal governments in the form of Taxes, (Which are used to construct more roads) than you pay for oil company profits.
It would be great if the Governments would start spending more money on public transportation, light and commuter rail, and progressively less on roads. That way we will not need to rely on oil as much!

Sorry Charlie, taxes on the road are charges on a per gallon charge. While the state sales taxes increase, all of that goes into general govt. With prices up, folks buy less gas; contributing to the crappy state of Michigan's budget.
Funding for both transit and roads are both tied to the federal and state gas taxes, if folks drive less; that means less money to operate transit with and to maintain the crappy roads. While I agree with you fundementally, we need some sort of fix to how folks are charged for their use of the road system. With hybrids becoming more commonplace and the addition of new technologies, this is bound to get worse before it gets better.
