Anyone have any good examples of basic trail signage? We have a rail-trail that has no signage. I've managed to talk our DPW into making a handful of basic signs. Our poor little trail is only 1 mile long and is difficult to find. So I was thinking 1/4 mi marker signs and a "Bike Path -->" sign or two for in town.
DPW needs colors, dimensions, font, #. Needless to say we don't have any standards for trail signage. Any of you care to share any examples?

Have you considered emulating forest service signs (wood posts and sign face)? People already recognize them so that would be a plus. You could substitute materials if durability/vandalism is an issue and just use the same color paint, ie, steel bollards and metal sign face painted to look like the letters are carved into the sign.
Might not have the same impact if you are in a very urban area though.

I created these maps when I did an unpaid GIS volunteering job with one of the local forest preserve districts about three years ago (there are several dozen of them throughout Cook County, IL.).
This is how a trail map looks like on a wood post (although the signage might seem too large for just a 1 mile path).

Do you have a MUTCD binder? It has graphic standards for all kinds of signs, including the standard symbols for trails. If you want to PM me your email, I could forward a pdf with some trail sign details inclusding those details that we used for a recent project.

Here are some pics I took for a charrette a few years ago that includes some signage. One thing I found interesting at this park was the disorderly typology of sign types...as if each generation of wayfinding specialists sought to reinvent the park's signage, and yet none of them seemed to create the gold standard that would be used next time.

I just completed the State required 16 CEU courses for continued registration as a Landscape Architect. Redvector.com furnished one of the courses which focussed on sign design. Have a look - I thought it was a good course for coordinated graphics, color, font, and so on!
There are some excellent examples or signage, interpretation boards and public artwork on the Bristol to Bath Railway Path. This is the busiest cycle way in the UK, with about 1.5 million trips a year, mainly on the very busy western end as the path passes through inner city suburbs and ends in the heart of the city centre.
The path is a dream, useful, fully segregated form traffic, flat, and perfect for both commuters and leisure trips. It was one of, if not the first conversion from railway to cycle path in the UK. Its a veritable cycling motorway, complete with grade separated junctions and traffic jams on busy weekday mornings.
