New student question: urban renewal vs urban redevelopment

I'm a new planning student doing research on urban redevelopment. It seems that the terms urban redevelopment and urban renewal are interchangeable? Is it just semantics?

Urban renewal typically refers to specific programs that were prominent in American cities in the mid-20th century. Jane Jacobs' book The Death and Life of Great American Cities documented and criticized the large-scale destruction of American inner-cities.

Urban redevelopment, as far as I know, does not refer to any specific program or event. It is a generic term for reinvesting in the center city; rebuilding neighborhoods or downtown areas; and discouraging sprawl.

    Bad Bad Word

For us North Easterners; Urban Renewal means massive ugly buildings dropped in from space destroying road networks, and the displacement of thousands of people. Look up Robert Moses and New York City
