An Iowa county has initiated a ban on the annual RAGBRAI bicycle tour.

Government officials there say its county roads “are not designed” for bicycle travel. This action came after a lawsuit filed by the surviving spouse of a rider, who was killed when his front wheel became caught in a county road center expansion joint.

At its insurance company’s advice, Crawford County officials agreed to the $350,000 settlement, but did not admit any negligence.

The county's insurance will cover the $350,000 payment, but taxpayers will have to come up with $5,000 for the deductible.
