    Greetings from Grand Rapids

Finally getting around to doing this...

--B.S. in UP from MSU, several semesters of grad school for updating
--Got away from planning during the Reagan years

--More than 15 years being an entrepreneur, self-employment, special event retail, living like a grad student
--Returned to planning via the cell tower biz. Have worked (as a contractor) for all the major carriers, and am presently an employee of the one whose commercials lampoon the others

--Planning tech at a small midwestern city...planning & zoning admin at a small coastline twp, SLU reviewer at a big midwestern city, planner at a mid-sized city (hired to write the bicycle component of the master plan)
--Guess which position I liked best

--Other gigs: been a magazine writer & editor (guess the special interest!), freelance writer, desktop publisher, publications project manager, taught Windows classes to adult ed (including Mac fans)

--Inveterate proofreader (Eats, Shoots, and Leafer?)

--I call contra (square, barn, hoedown) dances for private parties, weddings, Civil War re-enactors

--Extensive collection of cityscape attire and fabric

--Transportation cyclist. Favorite City keeps conscripting me to line up the sponsors (advertisers) for the local bicycle map, and I keep saying yes

--Brand-new homeowner (June '07) and frequent buyer at home center places.

--Single, looking, inspired by the RJ & ZG story. Family of three charming kitties.

--Low brass street musician; want to help make Mardi Gras a national holiday

Welcome from a native Michgander in economic exile here in Chicagoland.

Should be we friends? I did my MUP at U of M.
I'm sorry. Is my bias showing?

The ends can justify the means.

Welcome from the Hoosier State along the Ohio River.
    Oddball
Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves?
Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here?
Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?
    From Kelly's Heroes (1970)

Are you sure you're not hurt ?
No. Just some parts wake up faster than others.
Broke parts take a little longer, though.

I started at U-M and left when it became apparent that transportation engineeing was Not Me. MSU did (and does) have a four-year plan.

Still have both my marching band jackets.

    Hello, from no-longer-in-Irving, TX!
"We do not need any other Tutankhamun's tomb with all its treasures. We need context. We need understanding. We need knowledge of historical events to tie them together. We don't know much. Of course we know a lot, but it is context that's missing, not treasures." - Werner Herzog, in Archaeology, March/April 2011

Another belated hello from a fellow citizen of the grand city on a grand river. Michaelskis and I are happy to share W. Michigan honors with you. Welcome to the forum; there's an awful lot of knowledge here.
SOME say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate
To know that for destruction ice
    Is also great
    And would suffice.

    Everyone from Michigan does this

i.e. refer to their "handy" map of the lower peninsula when discussing locations and destinations.

hey now you two are not the only ones inhabiting the grand river valley! There are at least two or more of us who lurk around here!

Hello Velo I am out in the boonies with the loonies in NE Kent. I enjoyed your photo essay on bad pedestrian access on 28th st. I have often thought the same thing! I would be the one picking my way through parking lots and over curbs when i'm waiting for the VW at Betten andn wanting to go somwwher else. I think there should be some local jitney express for people to move along that mess they call 28th street.

    welcome!

Saw another example right down the street last week. Silt fencing, check. Blocking the curb cut. Whah?!? (It's on the corner with the Excel Inn. Patterson?)

Photo coming soon, it's slow at "work" (I should spell that with an "irk").

UP meet-up next week, come on down (town)!
