    Planning Commission talkers

I don't know where this fits so I put it here.
What do you do when PC members have side bar conversations during staff presentations at a meeting? They're distracting and if what they are saying is so important then it should be shared with the rest of the PC. I feel like telling certain members to shut the f*** up and pay attention.

I usually pause and announce that I will wait until they are finished with their discussion.

Do you have a board attorney who could say something along the lines of all discussion must be public and recorded? That may stop it especially if they remember they are on tape recorder.

It's just a fact of life. They usually follow up their side bars with a question that illustrates that they weren't paying attention. You can respond in a manner that points that out but it's a losing battle in the long run.

What you need is a strong chair that doesn't tolerate that stuff.

I think that a gentle reminder to the entire commission in the staff report would be appropriate - not only is it rude, it could be a violation of the open meetings act. Then if it were to continue the chairperson needs to address it. If they are that dense, maybe public humiliation will work

I've never really had this problem. I've been lucky to have great chairs who keep everybody on task. But there have been times everybody has gotten off topic, sometimes saying things they may not want on public record, and I've had to jokingly remind them they are being recorded.

I've actually gotten up from my seat and gone over the tell the offending commissioners to knock it off. That is usually followed up with a private conversation with them by the county attorney.
