    Grand Rapids, Mich meet-ups

Recently I started setting up informal convenings (hey! a new word!) at various locales around town. Mostly this is because my office is a anti-social place; looking for non-judgmental human contact during the day. If you'd like to be included on my Cascade Coffee Club list, or any other, just PM me.

Tonight is the art museum's Friday special ($4 admission, live music, cash bar, cash buffet), and there's an open call out for Urban Planeteers, some of whom will be enjoying the new GRAM for the first time. Cyburbians welcome. (I imagine the topic of Acme Twp and Meijer will come up.) No need to RSVP, just look for a small group of mis-matched folks who clearly are not on a date.

(GRAM is on Monroe Center adjacent to the Rosa Parks Circle ice rink. Parking in the beautifully-disguised city deck a block east.)

Just curious, what do you do that would make people hostile to you and feel judgmental? Or do you just work in a place where you fit like a square peg in a round hole?
I can't deliver UTOPIA, but I can create a HELL for you to LIVE in :)DoD:(

The latter. It's a satellite office for the operations and maintenance folk, and I'm there "because, just because." Some of the cow-irkers have been with the company 25+ years, a card frequently played.

The place is run by Mr OCD. For a while he was monitoring my attire, comings and goings (my supervisor is five hours away), whether I sat up straight, etc. (Once a tech came in wearing sweatpants, and he told her to not let me see this because I would start wearing them too.) The other members of my workgroup are in different offices, and my tasks overlap the maintenance concerns only peripherally.

For all the hand-wringing, he'll let a vendor in the front door (on the leg of the U where he is) and tell the visitor to wander through the coffee area to find me (on the tip of the other leg of the U, through the cavern of file cabinets...not to mention that it's really unprofessional and inappropriate to send a stranger wandering around unescorted and unannounced).

Some six weeks after I started, one of his people finally spoke to me. His words were not, "hi, I'm Mike, you must be our new real estate specialist," or "welcome to all hell" or anything else warm and friendly. What he said was, "are you done with the microwave yet?"

There's much more in the "annoyances at work" thread. Last week a small group met for coffee, and I can't recall the last time I smiled so much that my face hurt!

I will be there! It is a cool development, but I am sad that the church left. I think that a couple others from the HHA exec board might be there too!
