Market area analysis

We're writing a report on market area analysis and had a bit of a discussion on how the following sentence reads:

"The findings within the Comprehensive Retail Report indicated that Region 2 has several underserved business categories with the remainder being balanced to generally well-served."

Is it just me or does this read as the businesses are being underserved, as in there isn't enough market for those business categories.

However, what we're trying to say is the area is underserved for these specific categories. As in "there is market for it and not enough businesses in the area.

Anyone familiar with market analyses should understand the sentence, but lay people might be confused. The target is audience would dictate how you handle it.

Thanks Gedunker.....it will be a part of a sector plan available online for planners, developers and residents to get information about the area. What would work better?

Simple, straightforward, impossible to misinterpret. That is how it should read. If there is a question, try new wording.

I think so. Do you mean that the market in Region 2 is underserved?

Try: "Region 2 is underserved by several business categories..."

I think that would comply with the point the analysis is trying to make.
