Guess the Year #43 (up up and away edition)

While we're waiting for mendelman to come up with a good GTY, take a stab at this one.

Impress the hell out of friends and family by guessing not only the year, but correctly naming the location!
People will miss that it once meant something to be Southern or Midwestern. It doesn't mean much now, except for the climate. The question, “Where are you from?” doesn't lead to anything odd or interesting. They live somewhere near a Gap store, and what else do you need to know? - Garrison Keillor

I'll go slightly later with 1953 and place it somewhere in Nevada.

My googling skills lead me to concur with the above. Is googling considered cheating in GTY?

All's fair in love and war...and GTY.

Unfortunately that's not the correct answer!

Folks are getting pretty close on the date but not on the locale so far.

Well based on this I'll go with 1950 in Cape Canaveral FL... Most google results attribute the photo to Feb 24, 1949 in White Sands, but further reading says this particular rocket program was also the first to use the new facility at Cape Canaveral.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner! Yes, the year was 1950 and this historic photo is of the very first launch at Cape Canveral.

I did not google it....I was a big rocket fan in my youth...my next guess would have been 1944 - Germany.

    That does look kinda like a V-2, and I believe that's a two-stager.

Well, the same guy designed both that and the V-2, so the resemblance should be there.
