Usually we've done superficial things like giving up late-night snacks and beer or nail biting but this year the wife and I are giving up being judgmental towards other people, be it in person or on TV. This takes self-determination, but for every comment (or bad thought) we are going to put a dollar in a jar and come Easter we'll donate to a charity.

As some facebookers already know, i have given up chocolate and sweet things such as bakes and biscuits. I always give up some vice- i gorge chocolate like there is no tomorrow, so hopefully i can last the 40 days!

Try giving up Facebook for Lent! Holy buckets THAT'S tough!! I made it about 2 weeks.
I don't do lent, but other members of my family do. I guess I'm a bit of a black sheep in this regard. I do eat fish on Fridays during lent, mainly because the Catholic church near my home does an tasty fish fry/grilled fish charity fundraiser every Friday during lent.

I try to give up something, as I am a good catholic, but I do forget about Friday meat... (sometimes on purpose)....
Although the reasoning for lent is pretty shoddy I think (if you look at the reasons they don't scream you should do this), I still try to give something up, more for the reason on practicing self control. I find it amazing how tough it is to practice sometimes. This year I am going to try and slow things down, and I am giving up channel surfing. I can wait through the commercials. It will be tough, but maybe it will teach me some patience...

I'm observing Lent this year. I gave up refined sugar, caffeine, and alcohol. It just happens that this meshes well with a physical regimen that I put myself on four weeks ago.

About a third of the people I've seen today have ashes smeared on their foreheads. Welcome to Buffalo. When I was younger, people would openly question why I didn't have ashes on my forehead.
One good thing about Lent; many restaurants will serve fish fry on every day, instead of just Friday and Saturday. The taverns always serve fish fry every day; it's just easier now to get it at a Greek family restaurant or other establishment.

...within 15 minutes of coming back from lunch. As you could guess - not a lot of Catholics 'round these parts.
I quit church in the 7th grade, and grew up in a all Catholic neighborhood in Massachusetts. I live in Maryland now and don't know where the Catholic Church is located. I only go to funerals and weddings in churchs now. I am beyond being a lasped Catholic, I just don't like organized relegion at all, but I have no problem with others who are relegious.
Just think of it as something to look forward to. By the time Easter rolls around you'll have built up such anticipation for it that it will probably be the Best. Chocolate. Ever. (that, or the Most.
