    Hello from Auckland, New Zealand

Greetings all! I'm an American living in New Zealand. As if moving to NZ wasn't enough of a change for me, I'm now plotting a career move from IT to the exciting world of urban planning.

After a few years hanging out upside down on the bottom of the globe, I'm leaning toward moving back to the states to do my masters in planning. Portland, Seattle, and the Bay Area are my top picks geographically. Can anyone make any recommendations about the quality of masters programs in those cities (I've seen accredited programs at Portland State, Berkeley, and UW)? Is there any hope of a beginning planner getting work in those cities once he's graduated?

This looks like a great site with lots of active participants. I hope to enjoy many a lively discussion here.

is it true? or too good to be true?

    Hey Yankee in Kiwi land,

Nice to make your acquaintance! Question...is it true, as the advertisements say, that there is a shortage of planners down in NZ? And what made you want to jump ship from IT to planning?

I am starting my master's this fall in California, btw.

    =-)

    Hello, from Dallas, TX!
"We do not need any other Tutankhamun's tomb with all its treasures. We need context. We need understanding. We need knowledge of historical events to tie them together. We don't know much. Of course we know a lot, but it is context that's missing, not treasures." - Werner Herzog, in Archaeology, March/April 2011
