    LA County Planning Assistant exam

Iím scheduled to take the LA County exam for a Planning Assistant position. I have an MA in Planning from Europe, so Iíd like to prepare as much as possible. Iíve been reading Levyís Contemporary Urban Planning and Fultonís Guide to California Planning and have checked out LA Countyís prep website, which is mostly related to clerical work. Does anyone know anything about the exam? Are there any other texts you can recommend? Thanks!

CEQA, CEQA, CEQA. And the Subdivision Map Act.

Here are some links from CalAPA. Focus on the LUPIN and CERES web sites.

Planning, Zoning and Development Laws from the Governor's OPR are here. Browse that, too.

    Good luck!

Do you know if the exam is written or oral, or both? Fulton's Guide to Planning is a good start, and I agree with knowing CEQA and Subdivision Map Act. However, I wouldn't get stuck on memorizing every state planning law. In an oral exam, make sure know the relationship between the General Plan and the Zoning Ordinance. I know it's simple--but it's key. In a written exam, I've had to do a quick site plan review analysis, so make sure you have some understanding knowing what to look for. Last, be able to use these words with ease: findings, conditions, mitigation. These are just a few tips off the top of my head, I hope someone else can chime in on the LA County exam specifically.
