    Interview advice- development services rep.

    Hi all,
I had a quick question regarding an upcoming interview. I've been applying for work for the past five months with no luck. I have a B.A. in Community Development and some work related experience with surveying, AutoCAD and GIS. The position is for Development Services Representative, so its entry level, working the counter, building applications, variances, ect.
Even though my degree is in Community Development, I really want to start a career in planning. I know that this position will require good people skills and such, but my question is what technical info should I brush up on in order to really stand out in the interview?
    Any advice would really help.
    Thanks

A few tips in no particular order...

Know what department handles what, i.e. Engineering/Public Works handles right of way issues, Building Division handles construction related issues, Planning handles land use, design, etc.

As silly as it sounds know the basics: what is a setback?

You are aware of the customer service questions that may be asked, I don't see you being asked extremely technical questions. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Plan B is correct. Have an understanding of the basics. I suggest going to the community's web site and review their zoning and subdivsion ordinance. Review the bulk standards. Understand items like floor-area-ratio, impervious-surface-ratio, minimum frontages and how it's measured, maximum density and intensity, etc.

You get the picture. Good luck.
    Annoyingly insensitive
