MLK - We miss you.

There are very few people that I regard highly. Among those few are Mohandas Gandhi & Martin Luther King, Jr. Both of whom taught us so much. Tonight on the drive home I heard that it was 40 years to the day that the world lost Dr. King. I just posted here to thank Dr. King and those who continue his legacy.

There was a good interview on Talk of the Nation on NPR yesterday with ... oh, I can't remember, but it described the human side of Dr. King, not the more public face we're familiar with. Fascinating.

Those three assassinations ate up much of my childhood.

We went to my grandmother's funeral in Louisiana in 1964, and stopped at a laundromat to wash our clothes. On the glass windows was painted WHITES ONLY, and being from up north, my sibs and I later asked if there was another place to wash jeans and colorful clothing, and why would the owners care.

Being reminded of that and similar anniversaries, I look around to see how much has changed. And how much more there is to change.

MLK was an excellent and powerful example of peaceful protest and advocating change for the benefit of all people and the greater good of society, rather than just one or two groups of people. He is sorely missed and there has yet to be anyone since who has even come close to matching his grace.

The brevity of this post does not reflect what I think about what was a truely great man. He was willing to put it all on the line for a cause he believed in and ultimately did. In a situation that could have easily descended into a 2nd civil war, he didn't let it. A man of great faith, vision, and commitment, A man who preached tolerance and nonviolence for all in a county that didn't want to hear it. In a deeply divided country and world, we sorely need another leader like him. We were richly blessed to have him for a short while.

I often wonder that if the Palestinians took the approach of people like MLK or Gandhi and were willing to protest peacefully and just talk with those who oppose them, would they have their own nation by now?
