NY Times article - bicycle-sharing program to be first of kind in U.S.

A new public-private venture called SmartBike DC will make 120 bicycles available at 10 spots in central locations in the city. The automated program, which district officials say is the first of its kind in the nation, will operate in a similar fashion to car-sharing programs like Zipcar.

For a $40 annual membership fee, SmartBike users can check out three-speed bicycles for three hours at a time.

Bike-sharing has become a “public service subsidized by advertising,”

The low cost could be one of the program’s major selling points.
I think this is exciting and very promising.
I wonder how long it will take to prove itself before spreading to other cities ?
Would you like to see this happen in your fair city ?

Sounds good. It will be interesting to see how the numbers come out. I see a market for bikes in nice weather for trips from transit stations to workplace, but the ringer is what happens if there are no bikes to get one from the workplace back to the transit station?

For the dressed up exec., I wonder if Segways might work?

Sounds like the free bike programs in several cities across the USA. Except it costs $40.
Anyone want to adopt a dog?

Why can you only have the bike for three hours? It seems like one would need to have a deposit area near their workplace as well as near transit hubs... an eight or ten hour "rental" that seems more logical.
