    Cross-walk signs

A local advocacy group I work with is attempting to get the city of New Haven to place "Yield to Pedestrians in Crosswalk" (the temporary devices listed in the MUTCD) signs placed at various intersections throughout the city. The response we get from the city is that they can't or won't do it because of liability issues (i.e. cars hitting the signs). Numerous other towns and cities in the area use these signs without problems. Has anyone else faced this issue? How have you dealt with it? Are these liability issues real, and if so are they serious?

    Thanks,

    Tom

We use them - no liability issues.....just maintenance becasue people do run them over.

Have long have you been using them? Has there ever been a successful lawsuit carried out by a driver who struck one of the signs?

I am not certain of any lawsuits, but it is our state law to STOP for pedestrians in crosswalks. Our state capital has used them ever since I can remember and we only recently started using them here in Baltimore.

I doubt there are any liability issues.

Liability is a boiler plate answer engineers give when they are asked to do things that make pedestrian and bicycle travel safer.

Could you ask them about hte liability if a pedestrian gets hit by a car and the city neglected a sign?

In this case, "liability" really means "expending energy on maintenance."
