Following the conclusion of some strenuous recreational activities this morning, I began to consider how old and dilapidated this body of mine has become. I have the feeling that I have the aches and pains of somebody much older than me…or maybe not.
At this time thirty years ago, my right arm was in a cast, a pin through my wrist and elbow, and my mouth wired closed. I had complete fractures of the radius and ulna, separated elbow and fractured my mandible in two places. After three operations over 18 months, my orthopedic surgeon completed a great job in getting my arm repaired (thanks Dr. Gilbert). My jaw was wired shut for six weeks following open and closed reductions for two fractures. Again, another great job by a facial surgeon (thanks Dr. Howe).
On my release visit from Gilbert, he explained to me that over the years I might develop arthritic-type pains in the elbow. His crystal ball was correct. I can nearly predict weather changes and it aches after physical activity.
About two years ago, another malady hit me: my left hip. It’s nothing that makes me incapacitated but nonetheless is troubling. If I keep standing and moving, no problem.
Then a few months ago, more woe. At the top of both my tibias are small bumps. I think the bumps connect to tendons or muscles that extend into the feet. But the bump on my left tibia has become inflamed and is painful if pressure is applied.
Who else has reoccurring problems?
You young Cyburbians, what are your fears in aging?
Edit: I'm 51.
