Pioneer design standards

Our community's planning commission is interested in providing for the allowance of a "pioneer look" for downtown buildings within our existing design standards. Does anyone know of a community that has made allowances within the standards for this look (false front style wooden building look, etc)?

Although I would like to steer them away from this as much as possible, due mainly to maintenance concerns, the commission remains highly interested in allowing for this type of design.

I think you are wise to try to dissuade them -- a small town here in Indiana decided to mimic its pioneer settler's look and ended up with a downtown full of swiss chalet-style architecture. Not pleasant, at all.

I'm afraid I'm not aware of any design guidelines that would get what you are looking for. I'd imagine that historic photos, drawings, and paintings would be very important to base decisions on.

Don't know whether I mentioned this to you previously, but my ancestors were CB pioneers. Many are buried there. My G G Grandfather left with the Mormon Brigade and ended up settling in Nevada.

Dodge City in the urban renewal days constructed covered board walks downtown. Up against 1920s commercial architecture.Man is it ba...Man, could it be better.

Pretty bad, allright. Is it worse than a half-mile long beige metal shed? I don't think so (especially from a distance).

"Disney" charm is better than real sh!t. Real charm would be even better, of course.
