What software would you consider for planning?

well I know this sub section has been little slow with no new interesting post......... for almost two months or so?

So let me take initiative and start with really basic question..... and as we go in new years with new wishes, lets hope this section becomes live and sets standards for planning community others present . I am sure we will


Considering amount of impetus given for planning and designing in civil sector,

According to u which is the most widely used softwares and their key features

1. ESRI --- GIS
2. Autodesk -- GIS, BIM, CAD
3. Bentley -- CAD, Civil
etc....

I am on real shoestring in Greensburg. Thanks to a donation from the KS chapter, I was able to get Photoshop Elements and Adobe Acrobat. We already had a GIS system, which I am not able to manipulate...it is operated by the county emergency management. I think it is ArcGIS. I wish I had some control over the GIS, but I would need someone with the time to work it.

When I first took this position, the first purchases with the APA-KS donation were the old manual tools: triangles, compass, protractor, engineers scale, graph paper. We had NOTHING.
