Okay, not all cars are named after places west of the Mississippi, I believe Yugo briefly produced a car called the Florida, but I'd guess 90% of the cars that are named after places are named after places out west.
Doesn't someone make a Savannah? GMC perhaps?

What about the millions of Pontiacs?

I'd like to see a Chattanooga or a Cleveland!

Cadillac is also a city in Michigan. GMC has the Arcadia, Chrysler used to have a New Yorker.

What if the famous Stanley Steamer from a century ago had shifted its operations to Cleveland? Would they have renamed the car?
People will miss that it once meant something to be Southern or Midwestern. It doesn't mean much now, except for the climate. The question, “Where are you from?” doesn't lead to anything odd or interesting. They live somewhere near a Gap store, and what else do you need to know? - Garrison Keillor

Why are only women referred to as "coeds"? I know the original meaning, women attending a co-educational school. But why aren't men referred to a coeds of they are attending a co-educational school?

I contend that it's an archaic term. I hereby start a movement to ban coeds!!!

Why do some communities have water towers? Wouldn't it be easier to store the water below ground?

I always thought they helped create pressure within the system? You pump it in during off peak and use it to supplement the pressure during the peak? That is a good question really.

You're correct. Water towers are typically located in higher elevations exactly for increasing water pressure. By pumping it in off peak, it allows capacity not to be as big of an issue. I saw this question and it made me smile. I guess not all planners are as focused on moving people and poop as I am!

Why do they ask for race / ethnicity on health insurance application forms? Wouldn't that kind of discrimination be illegal? Sorry for asking a serious question on what appears to be a light-hearted thread.

For their statistical tracking and to better shape how they sell their products to minorities.

Hmmm. I thought that might have been the case until I realized it was a required part of the application. When you apply for jobs, that's why they ask you that stuff, but they don't require it.

It is still statistical tracking. Some minority groups are more prone to get certain diseases due to genetics.

I don't think I've seen the once ubiquitous food packaging label "reg penna dept agr" for several years. Wonder what happened? Did they get rid of it? Anyone else seen it lately?

Yep, and it is not to be confused with SoCo which stands for Southern Comfort.

Can I have some context for why you guys like to talk about Ithaca so much? Is it viewed as a good place, or a bad place? What does it have to do with the Volvo?

    Here are my thoughts -
Because that is where Dan lives therefore the Center of the Cyburbian Universe and apparently you can't live there if you don't own Volvo.
    Oddball
Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves?
Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here?
Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

No. Just some parts wake up faster than others.
Broke parts take a little longer, though.

Ithaca is it's own strange little universe in upstate NY. It is home to Cornell and Ithaca College. It is full of uber liberal progressive academics juxtaposed against inner city poor. I think it would be a nice place to live. You're at the base of Cayuga Lake (one of the Finger Lakes) and are surrounded by natural beauty. You just have to put up with some pretentious hippies.

It feels like almost everyone there drives a Volvo.

I can't tell if it is good or bad, but others have said it seems to be one of the many "centers" of the cyburbian universe. Along with:

    Michigan
The black hole somewhere in FL
    I guess SLO albiet it doesn't have a Macy's

Just be glad you don't live in a "flyover" state like many cyburbians. hehe
