Parking for hospitals

Hi all,

I’m doing some research for parking requirements/demand at hospitals. Much of the industry-standard data is based on older hospitals and does not necessarily reflect many of services offered at more modern facilities.

Specifically, I’m looking for two things:

1) What are some typical parking requirements for recently constructed hospitals?


2) Do you know of any studies regarding parking demand at hospitals?

Look at the ITE Parking Generation book (3rd ed). There are several pages related to hospitals and medical centers. You'll need to consider the needs of many different groups- employees, and short- and long-term visitors.

There are probably useful parking studies/ratios available online.

Our (small city in coastal Oregon) requirement is one space per two beds, plus one space for each employee. Why that is the requirement is beyond my ken; "it was like that when I got here."

I'm not sure how helpful it is to you. But it is interesting because it was conducting during the infamous aerial tram controversy.

Here in New York City, if you can walk from your parking space to the hospital, then you're not sick enough to need it.
