Book Review Article about Penn Station

The rise and fall of Penn Station

Conquering Gotham: A Gilded Age Epic: The Construction of Penn Station and Its Tunnels,
by Jill Jonnes; Viking, 368 pages, $27.95.

The demise of McKim's masterpiece becomes a metaphor for the decline of the railroads, and Jonnes sensitively covers the causes competition posed by car and plane travel, government funding of the interstate system and airports, and the complacency of New Yorkers. She leaves us with some poignant images, including one of the station's female statues called Day languishing in the Meadowlands, and architects protesting on the rainy day that demolition begins.
Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves?
Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here?
Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?
    From Kelly's Heroes (1970)

Are you sure you're not hurt ?
No. Just some parts wake up faster than others.
Broke parts take a little longer, though.
    From Electric Horseman (1979)

This book was a somewhat boring story told exceptionally well. If you're looking for something easy to read and are at all interested in underground tunnels I'd recommend it.
