WSJ Article: Why Scientists Love to Study Golf

If there's a frontier in golf research, it's neuroscience.

Since pro golfers are single-mindedly motivated toward one goal, winning tournaments by taking as few strokes as possible, studying such topics as their risk-reward strategies and competitive awareness have real-world implications in business and management, he said.

We played a scramble on Friday. We completed 10 holes and had teed off on the 11th before the thunder storm hit and they canceled the tournament. I was carrying the group on my shoulders. Really.

Here is a golf ethics question for you.

What if you were playing in the club championship tournament finals and the match was halved at the end of 17 holes. You had the honor and hit your ball a modest two hundred fifty yards to the middle of the fairway, leaving a simple six iron to the pin. Your opponent then hits his ball, lofting it deep into the woods to the right of the fairway. Being the golfing gentleman that you are, you help your opponent look for his ball. Just before the permitted five minute search period ends, your opponent says: "Go ahead and hit your second shot and if I don't find it in time, I'll concede the match."

You hit your ball, landing it on the green, stopping about ten feet from the pin. About the time your ball comes to rest, you hear your opponent exclaim from deep in the woods: "I found it!". The second sound you hear is a click, the sound of a club striking a ball and the ball comes sailing out of the woods and lands on the green, stopping no more than six inches from the hole.

Now here is the ethical dilemma: Do you pull the cheating bastard's ball out of your pocket and confront him with it or do you keep your mouth shut?

A glove to the cheek and pistols at 20 paces is in order, sir.
People will miss that it once meant something to be Southern or Midwestern. It doesn't mean much now, except for the climate. The question, “Where are you from?” doesn't lead to anything odd or interesting. They live somewhere near a Gap store, and what else do you need to know? - Garrison Keillor

Anybody familiar with golfing opportunities in the Nashville TN area? Course and accommodation recommendations/suggestions are welcome. At least three of us are planning a trip in July. Thanks.

Last Saturday I shot a 79. This past Saturday I shot a 91. Talk about consistentcy (not). I love this game.

Both scores have a nine in them. That's about as consistent as I ever got.

    Problem solved...

I bought a new putter today. This bad girl will deliver me to nirvana by slashing 5-8 strokes off my rounds. It looks that good!!!
From this point forward, I will be reporting scores in the mid-80s.

Lot of optimism to think that your game will improve when you're in your 80's. Don't count on your putter still performing at that age.

Don't play the courses around Sandestin/Baytowne Wharf FL. They need upgrading. Take a pass on this area.

I quit scoring after nine holes today. It was that bad.

Which is a thin disguise or just a blatant excuse for a Laefest.

Anybody ever attend a golf school/academy? I'm thinking of doing this because I'm tired of being a crappy player.

Took a couple lessons from the pro at our course, then did a followup a couple months later. Haven't done an academy though.

I'm such an impulse buyer when it comes to golf equipment. Recently I dropped over $200 on a Titliest 913 Hybrid just because I liked how I was hitting it into the simulator at Golfsmith. The other day I'm hooking the ball like crazy with it on the course. I think they rig those simulators or something. In any event, I should have bought a 3-wood from the Dick's clearance rack.

RJ- there's a nice little write-up in Golf Digest this month about Camp Creek as a U.S. Open qualifier. I didn't know that FL courses could qualify for the Open considering all the spring tournaments down there (Bay Hill, Doral, Honda Classic, Players)
